    dreaming... NO WAY!

for the last 2 nights now i have gone down the ross river chasing barra.
i was not about to let another season go by without catching my first ever legal, so on monday night headed down with brett (levenge). caught enough bait but all we managed was a couple of sucks from barra. last night with matt muller.....

after catching some good lively's, we got the anchor in just before dark. matt told me that where we were looks like a prime spot for barra, picked a nice 5inch mullet out of the live bait tank & on he went the next one was a live mud gut herring & the third a greenback herring. matt chose to fish with dead bait & after showing a couple of his tricks he too was in fishing. sat back & played the waiting game, the incoming tide was steady & i watched the rod tips boucing cause of the live bait. i also had my young falla with us cause he has been going to school (prep) for a few days straight & this is his reward...

after an hour passing by, matt had some intrest with 1 of his baits that he had cast up beside the mangroves. just a slight bend in the rod, BARRA BARRA he yells but the fish didn't take it so he left it in for a while . this happend a few times for matt & 1 of his baits was a mullet that had been sucked on, we know that they are around now.after settling back in & checking the live baits from time to time...

the end rod (which had the live mud gut herring on) bent over in a deep curve, by the time it took me to get it out of the rod holder the reel was screaming! was this to be my first decent barra??? the first run the fish stayed deep than the fish broke clean out of the water (now this is where i started shaking alot). turned & headed up current, turned again & he came out of the water the water again. took off over the anocher rope & headed towards the mangroves, i got him to turn & he was now going under the anocher rope & under the boat heading towards the middle of the creek. so under the rope my rod goes & now back into fighting him, matt has the net ready as i am getting him closer to the boat & with 1 clean shot matt has got my first ever decent barra in the net, ( now i am really shaking). the barra was 76cm of bright chrome!!! & with only a few days left to the closed season, how sweet.

thanks matt (you told me that you would get me to catch my first barra) i learnt & will not forget, & i bet you learnt something about kids (luke had a million questions for him...haha).
so it's barra burgers for tonites dinner.

Bout Time Ronnie. Now that you've got your first Barra, we need to concentrate on my first fingermark.

They fight well don't they and at that size eat just as good too.

Well done on the nice fish mate. Its been 2 seasons since my last barra, but that's my fault, haven't been putting the effort in, so I guess I'll have to wait til next season, Feb 1st....I can't wait.
