Thread: Group Formation to start the fight

Re: Group Formation to start the fight

As Timmi said in the original post, we have to be apolitical and leave our personal political thoughts at the door. Well done for everybody so far, that side has been great. As Phill, Oldboot and a number of us have said, we have to band together on a number of fronts. We all have to be singing from the same prayer book so to speak and we MUST be united. It doesn't matter which of the governments is in at the time, an agreement with the Greens is always going to create this type of problem.

Phill, with that list that you have created, has there been much consideration to who of us on Ausfish comes from a marine science or enviromnent background? Is there anyway we can harness this knowledge to better arm ourselves with the scientific arguments that we will eventually have to argue against??

I really believe that the only way to beat the 'green' policies is to crush their 'science' with as much fact as possible. We have to disprove their theories and not attack the individual. (although I am great at making concrete boots of varying sizes)
Will there be a platform (in adition to saveour bay) that the average family can access the relevant arguments to better gain a clearer understanding on all the issues that we will be highlighting.

Education of ourselves and others is important to combat this, self interested emotional pleas wont last 5 seconds in the community and I like the way people are thinking - we need some high caliber people who understand the science to help us form the arguments - hopefully we have some in our 'community'

Correct, we have to be apolitical, internally, so that we can be focussed on the issues, and not petty internal crap. Some folks must understand that this will mean compromise in some areas for them, or for others. Outside? Regarding politics, we'll do what is appropriate at the time.

One element of the list we are building is "what you can do". I haven't seen anyone of that ilk come up yet, but I have not seen the list since Monday - been away meeting my new Godson!!!

Yes, we need to be talking fact, fact, and nothing but fact. That said, a lot of the facts are not available, so there will be a place for anecdote based on experience.

Communication is a key issue; we need to be presenting ourselves to average folks in such a way that they can know us easily.

People, momentum is building. The list of "Footsoldiers" is now exceeding 70 people. Our objective is that the 14 November meeting will be more about communication, ie. we should have a lot of the "image" stuff sorted by then.

    Cheers,

Re: Group Formation to start the fight

Greg, it started last year when the Boat and Car rally took place through the streets of Brisbane. The EPA were well aware of us then and we got heard again with the first ever Legal On Water Rally in Brisbane a while ago.

The " visual " side of SOBA Inc has not been seen for a while but the education and behind the scenes events have continued. The MBAA took a little of the spotlight in regard to the MBMP Zoning issues, but they are commercially bias in that their membership. Nothing wrong with that, but SOBA Inc is a totally recreational angler driven entity.

We are doing something currently.... and with a meeting planned for the 14th November that will meld the membership and interested parties into a much better organised and effecient group.

To answer a question from watta and Clee in respect to qualified people, yes, we have very qualified people that are willing to assist us. We can provide factual statments and data that will show the present Governments plans are non-science based or at worst ' bad ' science '. The names and qualifications of these people will not be made public on this forum just yet.

The SOBA Inc group need to have a media spokeperson that can relay the message from the recreational anglers to the public and other anglers in a professional and respected way. This is one point on the agenda. We need to stay focused on specific areas of concern, but definately not forgo other areas that remain of high interest.

This is why a ' what can you do " area is available in the membership list. Splinter groups which will support the main focus will be appointed. We have offers of " feet on the ground " support, others have offered ' financial ' support. We have research offers, placard/ poster/ banner offers, PA system, management, transport, stationary, letter writers and more. We need smaller groups to focus on their particular area of interest so that the main focus and " voice " of the recreational angler can and will be heard loud and clear.

Please be patient, as we are doing what we can the best we can given the conditions and experience available at the present time.

We want to get it right. We really appreciate all offers and ideas and opinions.

Re: Group Formation to start the fight

I have come in late on this one as i have been away on a fishing trip to the Nth Qld areas.

I can remember back to when we were encouraging members and others to log submissions to the EPA before the deadline of March i believe and when we were running the boat rally run through the washing machine, we all made the observations that the general fishing public knew nothing of the proposed green zones?????????

An idea i have, would be, once we have decided on an action line to take and we need as much suport as we can get, to have printed thousands of flyers and have our members and others man boat ramps at the weekends and other times to distribute them as well as talk to the unknowing fisherman who by now must surely realise that something is just not right with our fishing rights, this, maybe just might get us a large number supporters. After all, i believe that there are many fisherman out there who are not members of Ausfish, some don't even have a computer.

I for one would be prepared to man, say Pelican Park (Clontarf) boat ramp over a number of weekends and some week days.

    Just a thought.

    John.

John..... this is line with our thinking. BTW I have added your name to our list

I hope to have a group email out by the end of next week with an update of events, theories, ideas, opinions, meetings, splinter groups etc etc.

Recreational Anglers are part of the Solution, not the problem !!!!

Re: Group Formation to start the fight

The first phase has to be recruitment and awreness..

In any sector of the community there will be a small percectage who have good understanding, know what is going on, are members of groups and know about the specilist suppliers.

The remainder will be largly ignorant and uninformed in every way.

In our sector, I believe the portion of the well informed is very small and there is a huge gulf in the qulaity of information and understanding the majority have.

Hell there are plenty out there who don't even know the one knot they need to tie mono line.

I think some sort of sugar coated "issues" news letter that has some good general fishing information possibly sponsored by a local business may be the sort of leverage that is needed.

Be it on line or hard coppy or both..

we need to give them a reason to be interested.........

And yes I think we need to become evangalists.....down at the boat ramp or wherever.

    cheers

Re: Group Formation to start the fight

    Just an idea,

On clean up Aust Day, we clean up the bay. I know this is happening already however:

An organised rec fishing group cleaning up the bay shows we all care and can't be painted in a bad light by the media.

Perhaps the vessels involved should be carrying certain political slogans sending messages to our dear pollies at the same time?

Re: Group Formation to start the fight

something of interest on briz 31 tonight on the spearfishing show they log their sightings of grey nurse and other sharks and are of the belief that the shark numbers are on the increase, these logs were funded by a recreational fisheries grant from the government to the tune of 70 grand! this flies in the face of current predictions and they are getting paid to do it with money allocated for rec fishers by the government, the AUF could be an ally for us rec fishers and teach us a thing or 2. hope this helps.
