    Barra/reefies rod and reel

I will be heading up north soon(mission beach), end of November, because of a wedding. I am wanting to know what rod and reel will suit casting SP for reefies and catching barra. My max limit is 250 for the rod and reel seeing as though I am a student. I am also thiniing about a baitcaster rod and reel for the barra, is it worth it? or would the spin combo do the job.

A good spin reel will do the job it is not so much the style of reel as the quality. Bait casters (which are rarely used for casting bait) are for shorter accurate casts. A spinner will dast a lighter lure / plastic further. Mind you if you are chasing barra you will have enough weigh to cast.

Be mindful bait casters are a whole different ball game. If you want to go bait caster get a bloody good one or you will hate it. Don't go bait caster just to be trendy.

The best all rounder is a spinner and for your budget that is probably the way to go.

Remember you still need good line, leader, etc. If you do want to go baitcaster shop around you might get a Shimano curado outfit for that money if you are lucky great for Barra, but it is not what I would recommend for reffies.

Darylive that's what I thought. I don't want want to buy all these fishing rods that don't suit my style of fishing down here in scarborough. I was thinking about 30lb fins braid with 60lb jinkai leader.

What outfits do you currently have? I would be looking for a setup you bcan still use in your normal fishing pursuits. To me a med/heavy baitcaster would work OK. It might be a little undergunned on BIG Barra and larger reefies but you would have a lot of fun before you got blown away. Back home it would work well for livebaiting as well as chasing Jacks and Cod.

Currently I have one starlo stix tournament lite spin matched with a stradic, berkley dropshot 2-4kg matched with an exceller, 3-6kg ian miller river raider with a teirra. I was thinking about taking the starlo stix tournament and the river raider but I wanted something that could handle a biggun. I am leaning towards a spin rod just because the ease of use and versatility of the type of rods and reels. And as well as this I was thinking about a spin combo for heavy SP work when I gon on fishing charters.

Thumbs up Re: Barra/reefies rod and reel

Mate I reckon stick with the spinner for what you do. I would look at a bit heavier outfit although most of us use around the 8 kg range rods believe it or not. you will want some heavy line though for the big girls although from what you say you are not fishing the sticks Barra still have cheek plates that give line a hiding and they pull like trains. Open water at least 20k braid and 40k leader, many use heavier line and leader and if you are in the sticks go up to at least 30 and 50.

The 30/60 you suggested is fine.

The outfit will also see you well for offshore palegics and reefies. This is close as you will get for an all rounder heavier outfit and you still pelt softies or jig the bottem.

Yeah I was thinking around an 8-10 kg rod, I am leaning towards the drop shot, does anyone know where I can get this from around brisbane?

Baitcaster Combo with Braid for the Barra and Handline with 100+ Mono for bottom bashing. That way you've got a perfectly good Baitcaster for home.

If you're looking at something to chase Macs or Tuna out in the reef you'd have to chose either a Barra Combo or Reef Combo, not really worth buying an in between.

Good point about hand lines. Cheap and effective for bottom bashing,
100+ Mono? Don't get a bloody snag or you will pull the boat under

Have dropshot myself and find them quite expensive for the blank around $149.00

Diawa 601XHFS (same blank) which is 6' spin and very suitable for big barra, Good casting all day and landed lots of barra over a metre on this rod. Have three of them myself and for the price very good. approx rrp $89.00 most good shops should be able to get them. Tee this up with a good spin reel around the 4000 Series and that should handle both jobs.

100 is no problem snapping it off the bottom, 160lbs like I use now that's a different story. The reason for the heavier line is once the fish takes you into a snag you can skull drag it out.
