Thread: Civil Disobdiance - Who's In

Re: Civil Disobdiance - Who's In

Perhaps there are more productive ways to run your campaign, even the Hells' Angels have a good public persona these days due to their Charity Runs for kids in hospital etc.
Civil disobedience may not get the general voting public onside.
Just a thought, good luck with whatever.
    Cheers.

I want to know what the liberal's position is on this. DO they support it or not? I'd also be interested in their position on the GBR marine zoning as well.

I doubt anything constructive can be organised. The poor show at the protest rallys showed how apathetic fishos are. Bligh and her cronies have decided to risk a feeble fisho backlash in favour of gaining the green machines support

When they introduced the marine park to Port Stephens, for the first 3 months or so there were no fines at all, just information sheets, maps and warnings.
The guys themselves are OK its the dickheaded idiology behind the zones that is the issue.
There was a guy in Byron who declared war on Ian macdonald (DPI Minister) down here and made a point of turning up at each and every public appearance he made and the guy ended up getting 10 times the coverage of mac donald and made him look like a ripe dick, but the fact still remains that the zones are still in place.

Yep it's happened for better or worse. The only test to see what the impact will be is time. Personally i've lost a few spots, but honestly I'm not about to have a serious stink about it. All i would have liked is a bit more thorough research before the zoning occured.

Did you see or read the research conducted and published by the MBAA? There were something like 150 peer reviewed scientific papers cited in their research. IMHO, that was some pretty comprehensive and credible research conducted, particularly on a limited budget, time etc. It is just a travesty that the EPA ignored largely ignored this research, and if I remember, they did not have a single peer reviewed sceintific paper to back up any figures or data they produced.

Re: Civil Disobdiance - Who's In

Where can i read these publications?

When i mentioned a lack of research i was referring to the EPA itself. Their aim was to cover 10% of each habitat type, but the hurried approach ment that they may not have chosen it wisely. Similarly for the different habitat types i don't see why all recreational fishing activities should be baned, the whole not being able to troll flat rock because of grey nurse sharks example. A rezoning of the bay was inevitable, i am largely on the fence on wether i think its a good or bad idea. As a recreational fisherman i naturally want to have access to everything, but as a conservation minded scientist i welcome the proposed rezoning (in conjunction with facing the other problems effecting the conservation of moreton bay). Thanks to the new zoning of the bay 40% will never be trawled again, a definate advantage from an environmental perspective. From an economic perspective the impact could go either way. I'm not saying that you guys should or should not continue to protest but in answering the poll question i will be following the new laws when they are imposed.

Grant Bennett is the man for a copy of the MBAA research. If you can't get a hold of him (he is on here regularly), I may still have a copy saved which I could email out if you give me an email address.

Re: Civil Disobdiance - Who's In

I think the big problem is the perception, as stated, the greater public want to feel good about their social conscious, and if the government elect say it is a good thing, along with supposed recycling, tree planting and ethanol fuel, people perceptionally sleep better because they believe it is all for the greater good.
Similarly, many fishermen are still perceived as beer / rum swilling yobs who congregate on a beach, have a huge bon fire, and pillage the ocean of its contents until the booze runs out.
Now I love a beer, rum, fish, and sitting by the fire, but I am not a yob, and nor are most of the members here I believe, but again, it is public perception.

If the greater public consider our plight one born out of selfishness for our desire to do the above mentioned stuff (drinking pillaging etc) then they won't care what we do.

We need to enlighten the great unwashed out there that most of us are ecologically sensitive people who fish with sustainability in mind, do not render fishing spots bleak and fished out, and we don't throw our rubbish overboard etc.
If we can portray to the masses we aren't a pack of dick heads who simply want to use fishing as a pissy good time, we may collectively improve the perception, and our plight.

I don't agree with civil disobedience, simply because it cements the perceptions I mention above into the greater publics mind who don't go fishing.

hello all. i'd like to make a few observations.

most of the comments on this thread have been repeated hundreds of times over the past year or so.

many of you have attended public meetings, some have joined ineffective fishing parties, less have attended protest rallies.

it seems that absolutely nothing has been achieved - except possibly to increase the number of restricted fishing zones !

it seems clear to me that a special interest group as small as ours ( yes i know a lot of people fish - but the voting public doesn't give a rats) cannot generate enough interest (power) to effect change.

i repeatedly see the greens blamed for the changes and see no reason to doubt this.

as a recfisher I would put my love for the environment up against anyones. i reckon that applies to most of you as well !

why don't we attack this issue from a different angle. as a group of environment lovers, wanting sustainable use of the bay, keen to protect of precious resource wouldn't we be welcomed with open arms by the Green Party ? From my brief research, I think you can join the green party in january (through to june) for under $30 bucks.

i think you'll find tha their member base is quite small and that a significant number of fisho's would be able to drive the party in different directions ( eg direction of preferences in the upcoming state election)

from the spin i've read - we both want the same thing - sustainability. well lets join up and sustain the hell out them ! democracy at work (ie minority goups working in their own self interest!)
    regards

Jeremy, I'm sure you're only joking but I'd hate to see dillies out there unattended . But the idea itself has merit, just imagine going to a green zone and finding a hundred or more 2L milk containers(addressed Anna Bligh/Andrew Fraser) with half a brick attached to them. Hope Marine Parks bring the big boat to collect them all. Cheers
