    Re: coopers tyres

There are reports of them chippin off lugs, particularly on rocky roads, but I had a very good run with them.
On my Hilux, I got about 60,000 KM on the STs and sold it with them still on. Probably would have got about 75 to 80,000km, I'd say.

Did a lot off dirt roads and off roading with them, a lot with heavy loads. Gibb River Road, Cape Leveque, Bungle Bungles, Gulf Road, etc as well as a lot of off roading with 4WD Club. A lot of the KM were done with boat on top and towing CT. Never had a problem and never had a puncture with the STs.

I now have a new 4WD and fitted BFG ATs this time. Only reason was to try something different as BFG and Cooper seem to dominate the market.

As with any tyre, I believe getting the pressure right is a very important factor.

i went through 2 sets of discoverer m/s on my 3/4 silverado 4wd.
i didn't get a ton of miles out of them, they are a softer composition, for snow, and i ran them on the highway through the summers. my bad.
over all, i liked the way they performed, and would buy them again.
i liked them so much, i bought a set of coopers touring tires for my corolla.
i've been very happy with them

I've got a set of 315's on mine at the moment in the all terrain . Absolute heap of crap , they are 16 months old and the treads are coming off everywhere . Spoke to tyre mob , told me i must be doing serious rock hopping , the only rocks it seen are on the beach .
Bought them because at the time nobody i could find made an AT in that size , hopefully others make them now , aint getting these things again.

I purchased 2 of the STs awhile ago hadnt done much with them before one of the tyres split on the sidewall. Was replaced under warranty which was all good, wasnt overly impressed on those tyres to buy a set of 4 when I needed them, so now have bridgestone LT 694s all round and I much prefer them.

I also run the Bridgestone 694's and am stoked with there performance! To the original question, my old man runs Cooper Discoverer ST/C (special anti cut and chip compound) which have been up the Cape and out to Birdsville + countless day trips camping and fishing without any major dramas, has had small punctures but thats to be expected. He runs them on an 80 series cruiser.

There was a hilux driving around Airlie Beach last year (current model) .The guy had actually gotten his full tailgate signwritten condemning coppers tires. He had had a major failure with them and no back up service so went to the trouble of paying to get his tailgate signed to let everyone know.

I have bridgestones on my navara and did on the last model afetr the factory crap wore out. Excellent milage . Only thing is they are a little tail happy on wet roads. I think however that says more about the leafs than the tyres.

Dunno what size yours are or how old they are but this might help:

    This from another forum:

You need to check the inside wall of the tyre (not the white writting side) and look for either of the three following numbers ->2805 , 2505 , 2506.

I've had stt (old pattern), at, lt and st from cooper on various vehicles and trailers. All have performed o.k. and all have hardened as they got older (all brands do). I went away from them when they got inordinately expensive.

Just reread - I've also got a set of ht's on a trailer at the moment. I've never had a premature failure of a cooper that wasn't from abuse.

Ring Whitsunday tyre centre, they will tell you why they failed. It wasn't from abuse. Something to do with the side walls.

    Re: coopers tyres

I have ATR's on my Prado and have been on the beach, in the mud, a lot of highway travel and so far have done 68000kms. Only 1 puncture - a 3" nail....Don't know how it got there, but it did.
They still have tread left, although I seem to be missing a few chunks of rubber. I also found out (through a reputable tyre mob) that taking the tyres onto the beach you void the km warranty because you are taking the vehicle off the sealed road....WTF????? IT'S A 4WD TYRE....???? The bloke just looked at me with that stupid look on his face and asked if I'd read the fine print.

I won't be buying another set. Not because of the warranty, but because they are supposed to be a 4wd tyre and they don't recommend driving off the black stuff. At close to $2000 for a set of tyres more research is needed IMHO.
