I live at Mission Beach,it's about halfway between Cairns and townsville.We've got 9 islands{Dunk,Bedarra etc} a few Ks out I can be at Dunk island in 5 minutes on a calm day and the fishings not bad.I usually get a trout or 2 and some sweetlip and the macs like it round the islands as well.We are close to the reef here and in 3/4 of an hour I can be at Hinchinbrook.It doesn't get much better than that!
I prefer the freshwater impoundment fishing and my Wife does not. That is what is so great about Awoonga Dam being so close. Solo fishing, peace and quite, tranquility............
