    can you eat pike?

Hi all, I just got back from moolooabah rock wall and had a heap of fun catching pike on lures, probably cought 50 or so in an hour. I used hard bodies, soft plasics, and poppers. they hit them all, good fun. anyway I was Wondering if anyone has tried eating pike and what they were like. Thanx Bundy_Dan.

Yeah the bones are the killer, still you can pickle them, would be lots of varying recipes on the net for pickled pike, they can be good food depending on how approached.

    cheers fnq

You could eat them if your desperate, but I would keep the for bait.

I have eaten them many times when they have padded out a feed of whiting. They are quite good to eat if breadcrumbed and shallow fried. White flesh with no strong fishy flavour. A lot of people are put off by the smell of the slime but the flesh is pretty good. I would ignore the advice from those who have not tried them

I thought thats what was hammering my Jerk shads on Tuesday! I wasnt about to downsize my placcy to find out as I was hoping for a big female flatty.

    Cheers

P.S. I hear they are great Cobe bait.

Horse, what would be the largest size you would eat? I found them rather coarse texture, but that was a metre fish. I generally use them for cut baits or trolling baits.

I have only eaten smaller specimens. As E.M. Grant says "the flavour bears a strong resemblance to Whiting". I much prefer to use them as live baits as inside the Bay they are probably my number 1 choice

    Re: can you eat pike?

I agree with Horse i have eaten them, crumbs and shallow fried they taste fine.

Back in the 1960s my old man had a fresh fish run and used to sell them under the name of rock whiting.

They are nice shallow fried. Keep them whole just scale and gut them and give them a good sprinkle of salt. Cook them nice and crispy and give them a good squeeze of lemon when done
