Night on the Pine - return from the darkside

    Ausfishers.

Took a mate for a night fish on the Pine on Tuesday. He fishes bait so picked up some prawns, pillies and whitebait. Got on the water at dusk, dropped a couple of pots and headed for the highway bridge based on other reports (thanks Nico).

Started in the channel but the current was very strong so decided to move over a couple of pilongs and anchor up. My mate was fishing prawns while I was on plastics. First cast to him an undersized bream, me zip. Few more casts to him a nice bream (27cm) me still zip. This went on for over an hour until his fifth bream when I decided to go back to the smelly stuff.

I ended with a couple of throwbacks but after the tide changed everything went pretty quiet. In the end my mate kept 3 bream around 27-29cm and had thrown back a couple that were just legal - his best effort ever. I didn't get a keeper and the crabs didn't play the game either.

It was a great night to be on the water and I consolidated myself with putting him onto the fish.

I still struggle with plastics at night - barely got a touch when I was using them even though we were casting in the exact same location and letting the baits drift through the target spot. Tried lots of colours right down to black - any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Think you need to up the ante with scent at night time ? you haven't said what sort of SP you were trying. Either that or try bright glow in the dark type colours.

Dunno in the main, luck of the draw, could be that coz he had smellys out the fish were drawn to them in the dark because of their stronger smell ?
If men are from Mars, and women are from Venus, politicians must be from uranus ?

Bad luck on the plackies mate at least you got your mate onto a few fish though!! I know Nico was using gulp shrimp the other night, and he was using them in the lit up area of the bridges (not sure if this would actualy make a difference though).

    Cheers

I was using Gulp - curly grubs, shrimp and worms plus I tried the new Atomic Guzzlerz.

Maybe need to try some other scent as well.

Mate , the plastics have been slow for me on the bream even during the day lately. Try a Hard body

I would opt for a small paddle tail at night for the extra vibration they produce. Curl tails do put out some sound but bugger all compared to paddle tails.

Try smearing on a geasy scent that hangs on for an extra attractant.

I dont think colours at night make any real difference if the fish are hunting, if they are just opportunistically cruising it makes the exercise harder again.

I tend to fish my plastics well clear of the bottom (about 1-2 metres off the bottom) because fish readily rise in the dark.
