First trip to South West Rocks

Hi fello fisho's. I am planning a trip to South West Rocks for the end of Jan '09. Staying for about 9 days. Taking my 6.2mtr Yalta. I've called in to South West Rocks overnite and know guys who have fished there also (unsuccessfully I must add) but I was hoping for any insight or suggestions some of you might have. I am aware of the bar and that it can be quite nasty and I am also aware of the incredible fishing that is on offer. If anyone could assist with what I could expect and how to best target the fish I'd be most grateful. Thanks to all and good fishing. Steve.

    Hi Steve

Beautiful place with good fishing in close.

Watch the bar, can certainly be a bit&h, PLENTY of boats have gone down there.

Plenty of Kings around fish rock, good fun.

That time of year should see the start of small blacks just a mile or 2 off the jail, also cobes in the same area.

Should also get onto some XOS spotties and spanno's of Grassy.

If you get a chance to get out wide in deep water there are some big Pearlies, Bar Cod etc to be caught, just got to find them.

In the River good jew off the Southern Wall and some big lizards

Drop in and see Charlie, from Charlie's Corner bait / convienience store, he will give you the goss.

    Cheers

Steve, I grew up local to SWR and still fish it a couple of times a year these days, middle 2 weeks of feb my most regular and favourite. I love the place.

Little blacks should be of the gaol down to fish rock by then, you may may be a bit early for the first real push of fish but they should be around. I much prefer trolled slimies, never had much success with plastic on these fish. Usually a good run of cobes mixed in with the bills.

Dollies out on the fad, and often a run or larger blacks & the odd blue out on the shelf at this time, only 12 mile to 100 fathoms in this part of the world.

Fish rock / black rock good for kings but usually a heap of rats in summer.

Yellowfin (most around 5-10kg) also around down toward the rock and out wide

Probably a bit early for spotties north up at grassy but maybe worth a shot. same for the odd spaniard, if you get one he will be big and fat.

Being so close to the shelf, if the EAC is running bottom fishing in any depth over 40m can be tough due to current. Usually the odd snapper to be had up north of scotts and grassy.

The bar is shite, always has been, always will be. Big river bar that runs hard, breaks in any sort of easterly sea and has some absolute monster pressure waves on the run out. I've seen a few go over there in my years (6m Razerline last trip). Take your time and poke through it is the key. anything from the south flattens it out. If you don't like the river you can use the creek, small shallow creek bar ok with half water or better, single break no worries but fishing time limited by the tide. Most boats use the river.

Hope you have a good trip, its a great spot, I'll be there feb 7th.

One last tip, don't go past the gaol without a tank load of slimies cos everything eats em down that way at that time of year. 2 main bait reefs, ask at the shop, follow the boats.
