Did my first trip on the river chasing those elusive threadfin this morning. Was on the water by 5.30 and headed down towards the mouth. Mainly concentrated on the edge of the channels (drop offs into 50ft+) using Mask Vibes and soft plastics. Did not see any bait on the sounder and didn't even get a bump. Pulled one very large and very ugly stonefish from the sunken wall before calling it quits at 9.30am.
Even though it was my first attempt at these critters, was bit dissappointed to not even get a bump. Mind you might have been doing all the wrong things in the wrong places. Was a great morning to be out on the water anyway.
Bad luck mate. Keep at it though the river is an amazing place and im sure you will have success in the near future. Maybe try some livies, I've always got at least a hit when i've used them.
Some of the guys getting better than average results are using live herring on a metre long trace and about a 1/2 oz sinker. Look for dropoffs between the eastern end of the sunken wall and luggage point.
Cheers guys. Yeah i think persistance is the key. Like anywhere, once you start to suss the place out a bit, results will be more consistant.
What type of structure do the threadies prefer in the river - shallow banks, deep ledges etc. Most of the ones i've caught up north came from casting at drains and small creeks.
I had a few casts tosarf with masks and vibes. I had some great shows on the sounder but also came up empty handed. My intention is to have a few serious trips over the next few months to sus these criters out,Best of luck mate
