    rigging herring for jacksHa

Had a query the other day on how i rig my dead herring for jacks(and grunter)Saw this in a book years ago and found for me it outfishes live bait most of the time.
    pic 1. herring
pic 2. fillet herring from tail to head.
pic3.cut off head round about the eyes
pic4.insert hook down the body, sort of thread it on like a worm.bring it out as close to the head as possible.
pic5.fold fillet over the head and pin tail end onto the hook.It takes a little practice to get this bit.
    pic6.finished product.
i put a half hitch round the tail and fish it on the top and bottom of the tide with a very small ball right on the hook,or no weight at all if fishing shallow.
sorry about the oic quality, had put the cam away b4 i looked at them. hope this helps.

Cheers chewy, I do prefer live bait, but its good to know a productive way a rigging the baits that die.

fish and boat magazine showed a way to rig a dead herring, they simply cut oped the stomach to alow the gut to act as a berley. they also put a couple of cuts along the body

Looks fairly similar to the Punchy Barnard rig - http://www.fishnet.com.au/library/kn...rdbaitrig.html

I currently rig whole dead bait is by putting the hook in about half way down the fish and coming out a hooks length towards the head. Put the hook so its in the flesh not all the way through the back. So the hook is laying along the fillet with the eye of the hook toward the tail end. Do a couple of half hitches around the tail to secure it. Then squash the head to release the flavour. Its quick and easy way to rig. But I can see the merit in chewy's method and I'll be sure to give it ago.

i normally do the opposite,,,, ie fillet the entire fish and use it as 2 baits,,,, never thought of the way shown here,,,,, top marks

I agree, a nicely presented dead herring can give better results than a live one.
I usually try a few live ones first, and if I dont get hits, then I will butterfly em. This usually gets better hits.

It seems the juices make their own burley trail.

I read somewhere that too much berley can put fish off in rivers - if theres too much food for em to choose from. Your better off making your bait the only thing in the water worth eating. Thats why I use Stimulate drops on my mullet fillets instead of real burley. This idea of cutting a herring follows the same principal of 'teaser' burley .

All you really want is the scent of food wafting down the water trail.

hay i have not see people doing this in years, if you go thrugh the old naffa mags, they show ya how to do it there as well. it dose work, but i only got coral trout, trevs and cod on it, no jacks (for me) but it is the no 1 killer bait for javalin.

Thanks for that haven't used that one before will give it a try. I suppose it would work on all dead baits including mullet and whiting.

                          Cheers
