    Herbert River Gorge

Just returned from a five day fishing hike with six good mates down the Herbert River Gorge in north Queensland.

The walk near killed us in terms of physical exertion especially the walk in down 1000 ft from the surrounding plateau. However the wild river scenery, fishing, camp fire tucker and shared times with good mates made it all worth while.

The fishing was great as well, a million sooties and enough barra to keep us on our toes with relatively light spin sticks. We only got a few keeper barra (enough for some very memorable feeds) but had a lot of sport with sub legal sized fish (45 - 58 cm).

This place remains etched on your brain forever and is highly recommended to anyone who rates the place as much of the experience as the fish. NB be fit and pack light <10kg (lighter than we did) if you want to keep the trip enjoyable as possible.

Regards and tight lines - Jim

    Awesome Jim, awesome.

It's been a while since I've seen a report from you on here and this one's a ripper!

What pound line where you guys generally using? Surely those barra would've been testing it?

    Thanks for the report,
    Andrew

    Re: Herbert River Gorge

    Some great scenery and report.

The first photo looks like it was taken from the Blencoe Falls Lookout, if so did you hike from there down into the gorge and head towards Mt Garnet?

Have been to Blencoe Falls a few times and always wondered what the fishing would be like in the area. Always assumed there would be Sooties however never thought Barra would be around.

    Thanks for the report.

    Regards Cameron.

    Re: Herbert River Gorge

Andrew although we werre using 'light' spin sticks most were spooled with fairly heavy GSP (7-10 kg) just in case bigger barra showed up which they are knoiwn to do in this area, Andrew we walked downstream from the Blencoe Ck confluence but there is also good country upstream. We did come across some big aggregations of sooties and some were running ripe (that time of year) - though other really hot looking spots held none which we put down to fish being in breeding aggregations elsewhere and also possibly the intimidating presence of big crocs (saw a few) in some holes.

What a great experience and trip. Thanks for posting all the photos as well. Certainly is a trip many of us would like to do and experience first hand. Very inspirational with the scenery and the good fishing would have just been the icing on the cake. thanks for the post.

    Re: Herbert River Gorge

Awesome Pics, whats the track like to get from Cardwell area to the falls lookout? Is it hardcore 4wd track (diff locker and/or winch) or is it just rough? As a Geo It would be good to get up there for look.

    Cheers for the great report

    Re: Herbert River Gorge

    Kendall,

The first visit that we made to Blencoe Falls (June 2008) from Cairns had us continuing towards Kennedy /Cardwell oblivious to the knowledge that the road had been closed for a while- there were no warning signs or anything to indicate the road was closed . We continued down the Range Road and thoroughly enjoyed the trip even though it was raining quite heavily and followed another car towing a small camper so wasn't worried too much, the road was in pretty good condition though a little slippery in places. It was only when we reached the bottom behind Kennedy that a Road Closed sign was in place at this end. When we arrived home we searched the internet to find out the road closure issue.
The attached link describes the road and why it was closed, not sure of the current status. http://www.csc.qld.gov.au/?p=568
