Hey all,
Got a call from a mate who is as mad as I am about fishing that he had borrowed a small tinny. The plan was to hit the Ross for the evening rising tide, get some livies and then try and find a deep hole out of the wind. Late start due to battery problems but when that was sorted we headed down......
It is important to remember that I have never fished the Ross off a boat and he has fished it once or twice......point being this was all very new to us and highly exciting![]()
So there we were, him driving and me poised with cast net off the bow looking for livies on the surface. We worked hard for our bucket of livies and I must admit I really enjoyed stalking bait and getting a good cast in. Once again this may be old hat to some but to us it was so absorbing I reckon we almost forgot about chasing the bigger fish and if sense hadnt prevailed we might still be there chasing bait balls now![]()
Eventually find a spot and anchor down and send the livies out to swim up a Barra or some other large denizen of the deep. We waited and waited and yip waited some more......nothing! Just when team spirit was getting a bit low on SS Bath tub my mates rod starts tapping gently....a crab perhaps? then nothing.....then it almost buckles in half and out of the water explodes the Barra we had been waiting so long for! This fish tried everything to get off-head shakes tail walks, somersaults.....that I was left feeling like a judge at the olympics and scored him highly on all manouvres. Ultimately not a beast at all at 74 cms but we had hatched a plan and it had worked.
The rest of the night was pretty uneventful and we returned to the ramp happy men.
By the way the owner of the boat received a fillet of the Barra for letting us use his tinny.
Got home and continued to nag the wife about the virtues of having a boat.......groundwork foundations almost complete![]()
