    Johnson 90 V4 many questions

Can anyone tell me definately when the first 90 hp engines appeared?
were they an upgrade from the 85?

can the leg length measured without removing cowlings and where is it measured from(length of middle section??)

are there any web pages listing part numbers etc for Johnson outboards?
Mine has no engine number as the clamp has been replaced and there is nothing on the block(no sign of one having been removed either)I am having trouble finding out the year model I have, I figure ancillary part numbers would give me an idea

also interested in specs of engines(bore, stroke, carbs etc.)
couple of outboard mechanics have told be that all that is needed is a exhaust plate change to get a 90 up to 115, but I am sceptical, I'd like to see spec sheets

    Thanks

hhmm no one tried to help on this one, OK so lets start from what I know (not much really) but leg length is measured from the "ledge" that sits on top of the transom to the cav plate (the flat bit just above the prop) it will be 20 or 25" now as far as removing a plate to make a 90 a 115, you can forget that first off, there is quite a few differences, mostly not worth fooling about with, far better to get what you have going 100% or buy another Motor, next, there is a few web sites for parts, I can look for you, or a "google" will find you lots as well, now as for when the 85 became a 90, that will be a guess, but I think about mid 80's again a google will find the answer if you are that keen, they were a sort of upgrade, while at the same time, almost totaly new! if that makes sense.

    Kev,
this site link gives zooming, exploded part charts, parts numbers and *prices* for most OMC motors - also many other brands. This particular link is for the gearcase leg on my motor - but just change the pull down menus to explore your motor, rather than mine, and click on the little diagram and keep zooming till you find what you want.

It seems that you can order from these guys too - I have not tried since I have been extremely well looked after in Bris for motor work, supply etc via Mal Leashman at Creek Marine.

try the brp website they have full list of part numbers
a 90hp started early 80's and age can usually be guess buy trim unit, ignition, heads, air box, cowling shape and part numbers from the brp website
post a pic of it and i could tell you within 1-5 years what it is
the buble backs came out on the 135-140hp engine up till 85 and on 115 engine after that so to make your 90hp a pre85 140hp or post 85 115hp you will need it to be ported, carbies, buble back exhaust, exhaust stuffers, intake stuffers, heads and maybe even exhaust tuner. so there is alot of work and machine work to be done. i have a few early 140hp parts that may give it more life but you will need to ported to get full advantage.
i have a 1980 140hp block with stuffers and exhaust that you can have for $150
or you can take just the heads and buble back cover for $100. as i can post that pretty cheap. alternativly i have a complete 140hp powerhead just needs electrics that cost me $800 to get re-ringed, new bearings and seals but my lower section was damaged when a so called mechanic tried to get it apart so i never fitted it. i'm after offers above $600 on that

not too sure the 140HP had much to do with the 90/115 Motors, but I could be wrong, all the rest is pretty well right, that why I said that to up the HP is more trouble than it is worth unless you are 100% sure of what you have and what you replace, as some mods will make a very lean running Motor, which will stuff up very quick, or a rich running and poor performing Motor.

That was just what I was looking for
    Thanks very much
and from the looks of this site
    and the ignition parts listed
my engine is not a 90hp at all
but either an 85 or 100hp unit form either 1978 or 79
or the CDI units on my engine have been replaced with those from one of these engines

I'll have to check out other part numbers to give me an idea which I'll need for water pump replacement etc.

    Hmmm
    thanks for that info
Had a feeling that there was a lot more to it than just a simple exhaust swap

I know a guy at Morayfield with a 140 that has a big hole in the block, rest of the unit is fine, might have to look into that
might be able to make a complete 140 for little over $1000
