Freight train!!
Hello all. Went for a wet and rainy fish today at mowbray park. Water was dirty and very few bait fish around. managed to get some large mullet so decided to fillet it and use strips for bait. Very quiet - managed to get a small cod. Right on the bottom of the tide got hit big time. It took off and did'nt look back. headed straight for the middle of the river in one very fast run that spooled all my line! Tried to slow it down by tightening the drag, but it just went faster. The most fun i've had in a while. Any ideas what it could be? I was using 20lb line and 30lb leader. No more bites after that, left wondering if it could have been the big jew i've been dreaming about.....

Re: Freight train!!
What ever it was i will have some of that. To brake 30 pound leader few go back and see. A thready puts up a good fight but not that hard. A dew or shark as i have caught neither. Cheers

Thanks dobson. The line didn't break, it just took all of it off my reel. marty and jojo- i didn't think bull sharks go that hard? All the ones i've caught haven't fought this way.

Re: Freight train!!
I would say its a shark......probably a whaler as they go harder than the bull sharks that I've caught.
You would turn a jew with 20lb line within a few hundred metres I think.

Bull sharks are whalers!

Re: Freight train!!
You would turn a jew, even a 30kg+, within 150m of heavy drag on 20lb.
I personally wouldn't think a shark as anything you couldn't stop on 20lb gear would have bitten you off within the first 50m.
I've got my money on a big ray.
Bigroders, bull sharks are a seperate species to Bronze Whalers.

Re: Freight train!!
yeah probably right. I don't think I would of had too much over about 200m of line. What can I do to stop this from happening again, heavier line and more of it?

Re: Freight train!!
