Pushed the boat in at river heads round 5.15am and headed 10 mins to my fave flattie spot. Put on the well worn bananafish bomber droppod the minn kota into the water and motored in.First cast im onto a little flattie round 45,2nd cast another round 55.ended up with 5 in nine casts at this spot. moved down to another spot and got another 6,the biggest going 68.all were released as i was chasing whiting later.Chasing as it turns out was the operative word.picked up a couple here and a couple there, but had work pretty hard for them.I poked the boat into a shallow drain, lifted the big motor and was nudging the bottom with the hull fishing for whiting when 20 metres away there was a huge explosion in the water.a big blue salmon was into a heap of gar. i clipped on a chrome long a bomber and cast out.unfortunately i only hadmy flattie spin rod.2nd cast this blue behemoth falls in behind my lure, then engulfs it 5 res from the boat.Only now seeing the size of this thing does the stupidity of what i have done hit home. This thing took off faster than anything iv hooked before and culdnt chase it coz im aground.i tried to motor out but was too shallow.i lookd at the reel and was into the backing already. it hit the deep water hit afterburners and the 2o lb backing popped.luckily the barbs were squashed on the bomber. As soon as the pressure came off he came to the surface thrashed about and the lure came free. i motored over that way and ended up with braid round the prop, but at least it wasnt still in the fish. All went quiet then so changed location. got onto a few nice whiting on the top of the tide.enoug for a feed.Bite went off so i dopped the kota in and moved along the island.no flatties but lo and behold a goldy bout 5 kg was tailing on the yabby bed,i cast out my squid rod with a small bomber on it and it was ind in no time.i played it for about ten minutes, got it close to the boat before the hooks pulled.None to worry it was going back anyhow. With the northerly blowing hard now i headed off home with a good feedand my faith in the salt restored.Briing n more of those blues... they are nuts..
