beach fishing rod selection an help!!

hey fellas i was after abit of help with rod selection an beach fishing as i am going to noosa north shore for a week in november am im hoping to get on to a few big things with teeth an maybe a jewie by catch at night as iv never caught any thing big off the beach bar a few flatties. at the moment im looking at about a 10-11ft rod with my tss-4 spooled with 30lb braid on it manly cuz i cant afford a new reel to go with the new rod id be using a runnign rig with a star sinker an putting it rightin the gutter. am i on the right track? can any one suggest a fairly cheapish rod that will do the trik an any tips yous could give me? like bait for instence as i know probly all the talior will be cleared out by then so im not to sure what the first choice bait would be. sorry for all the question but im pretty new to beach fishing an trying to get the kinks worked out so i can come back an share my photos an experiences with yous all.

    any would you be great!

There are some cheaper versions of the FSU4120 at places like @m@rt and the like. If you are mainly baitfishing I would look for a bit more length between 12' and 13'6"

Hi Mate. I just went through this myself...i had rods imported etc to make sure i got the one i wanted.......

You got two options....go the cheap or go the exy......

if your going the cheaper option using your existing tss4....make sure you are happy with the way it lays braid before spending the $ on the braid...ask around, IMO, it doesnt lay braid well enough to make it a good option....paricularly if you are going as heavy as 30 lbs.... you will lose significant casting distacnce if the braid has to fight to get off the spool......go a lighter nylon.....Also, im with horse in that I would be looking at somethin in the 12 - 13.6 range.........

    option 2..
if you decided to save up and spend large.....i would recommend a nitro graphite matched up with a newer style shimano spooled (a large spooled stradic should do) with good braid.....the daiwa surf stuff is ridiculously expensive but ridiculously good!!!

amm, well you could try Angler rods. they are fairly good mid range rods. They used to be built in austraila, but their cheap price tag suggests otherwise now. surecatch bigfields are standard fibreglass rods. 30lb line is very heavy for the surf. I use 20lb for tailor and 10 lb for whiting (not that it needs to be that heavy, but i use the rig for other stuff too). And for Jew i work with 30 lb mono.
Silstar make some good graphite rods reasonalby cheaply.
The backbone rods of east coast surf fishing are Snyders or old butterworths. (and gary howards). but these are upwards of $140. about 200 bucks for a composite one.

There are lots of tips on the beaches. the best tip I could give you is to see how other people are fishing certain locations and use similar techniques.

For bait, the best all round bait for smaller stuff is worm. Pippy is also great, and will catch more quality dart. for tailor pillys are good, but they get destroyed by pickers sometimes.

Jew wise, you may have to put some good hours in before you catch a big one. but you can come across a school sometimes.

    cheers

Sistar crystal power tip 12'. Very nice for the price, around $100 or so. Well worth a look if you are on a budget.
Great advice from both Rockfisho and Horse, IMO.
Pilchards or mullet strips if there are tailor around, no need for heavier than 8kg line from the beach, beach worms if no tailor about, these will catch whiting, dart, bream, flathead and even a jew if you are lucky enough to find one. 5-6kg line is fine for these fish, even for jew 8kg works if you are fishing the beach, just be patient as jew are not the toughest fish to beach, a large ray or shovelnose is far worse!
    Cheers and enjoy.

Sure, just use a larger sinker to compensate for the extra drag from the current on the thicker line.
If you are talking 30lb braid, disregard the above, however don't overtighten your drag, most 30lb braid will break higher than 30lb mono, wouldn't want to accidently snap the rod.
    Cheers.

    Hi Bowds13,
Nigel and the other boys give you some pretty good advice,I could not recommend any new rods and reels as I am set on my J.W Kilcunda which has served me very well over the years.and Penn over head reels I fish a heavy helmet when I use mono for jew.
Best of luck with your choices and better luck with the fish.
    Cheers Lew
