    Re: Weipa Fishing

One thing about Weipa James is that it is fairly predictable. October is a good month at Weipa for pelagics - longtails and spaniards will be south of Weipa towards Piera Head. Queenies will be all over the place and gts around the leads and around any reef structure such as south of Weipa. Barra will be starting to chew, but closed season and jacks are in most of the streams. A lot of big milkfish around the close reefs south of Weipa also if fly is your go. Black jew around close reefs + fingermark + trout + all sorts of other stuff. Only prob with Oct on the western cape is the daily south wester which kicks off at around 9 - 10am every day to 20 knots and is onshore. But before that the sea is flat with no breeze and hot.
Normally the houseboats park around Piera Head James, which has the souwester a bit offshore due to the angle of the coastline - is that where you guys are hangin? Is a very beautiful stretch of coast with lots of close reef and fish are plentiful.

    Hi James,

I was up there last week - plenty of spaniards out the front at the moment - i was getting tiny doggie macks on the troll and every one was followed to the boat (if not smashed) by a large spaniard - couldn't get the spaniards to bite - but didn't have my usual spaniard lures with me as i was up there for work..........am sure i could have got a few if i had the right gear at the time. (i was out near the end leads)

also got some very nice barra to 85cm around the rocks at Duyfken Point (west of the mouth of the pine river) the pine is a very popular place for the house boat as it give you a good sheltered anchorage with great river/estuary fishing and also rocks/reef out the front. a very big system too - lots of water to explore - though shallow in places on low tides out of the river proper - some good rocks bars up it as well which can really fire on jacks and fingermark.

Pera head is also popular with the house boat and is more pure bluewater action with longtails and spaniards, cobia and not to mention more queenies than you can poke a stick at and fingermark and other reefies on the bottom - but also barra on the rocks - closed season kicks in shortly if not already in the gulf for Barra though - check the dates out to be sure.

either way you should have a good week - especially if you're taking your own tinny or are hiring one with the house boat (i'd recommend it - it will open up your options a lot more.)

    Cheers,

    Moffy
