Passage Whiting

Made an early morning run up to Coochin Creek on Wednesday to chase a few Whiting. Scored a few good fish on the last of the run out but things were fairly quiet around the slack part of the tide . Anyone that knows Coochin Creek will know that the tide takes a long time before it starts to run in . An interesting sight was a 4 foot Bull Shark charging onto the sandbank just in front of the boat and thrashing its way into deeper water . I have seen quite a few of these guys on recent trips. As the tide started to run I picked up a few more Whiting after moving around to several favourite spots and ended up with a dozen good fish around the 30cm mark . Not large by Coochin standards but a good feed all the same.

Hi Benny01,
If I am only doing a day trip I usually put the boat in at Donnybrook and take a run up to the creek . It only takes about 15 minutes with A 30HP Honda pushing my 4.5 metre Stessco. If I want to stay up there for a few days I stay at the cabins on the creek itself and put the boat in from there. Coochin.

the lime pocket area and out the front of donybrook.
My normal ting spot around there has dried up so now i normally just chase flaties on SP.

Well done they look great! Ive only started fishing the passage this year and have done well on on flatties and bream and stuff on SPs, I usually go out from Donnybrook. I also caught some good winter whiting out on the Cockle Banks with Gulp worms, hit a couple of purple patches on them.
I guess these you got are summer whiting? the bigger guys. pardon my ignorance but I'm fairly new to the southeast estuary scene. What bait did you use, and what sort of areas are you targeting for these guys. Not asking for actual spots but the type of water/sand/runs etc. Creek mouths?

Hi Barraboy7,
I mainly only use Bloodworms for my Whiting although Yabbies are sometimes OK. Nearly all the Whiting are caught in 18 inches of water or less on top of the sandbanks around the mouth of the creeks running into the Passage. I find it doesn't really matter where I'm fishing if the tide is running in or out so long as there is a bit of run. I have tried a few of the soft plastic worms available with no success as yet but it will happen one day. Hope this helps you score a few .
