More Whiting

Hey Guys,

Me and My mate got up early on Monday and headed out to the Nerang River in chase for more whiting. We started up around the council chambers and noticed a spot were 4 boats were already parked, but we didnt stop. We headed up out opposite the Titanium bar and picked up a couple nice whiting but they werent thick. Then moved around for the rest of the day back towards bundall bridge pickin up a couple here and there aswell as stopping in that spot were 4 boats were parked previously (picked up a couple there too). Ended up with 10 nice size whiting with 8 over 30(two 34's and one 35cm) and 3 bream picked up along the way. The whiting were definetley not thick once again but they were there. Im just wondering for all you whiting fisho's out there, do whiting ever get thick or do they just sortof swim by in schools every 5/10 mins?

Anyhow we both broke our whiting PB's:
Mine is now 34cm
Toms is now 35cm

Oh yeah. They get thick alright. In winter with the diver whitting, 1 small squid tentickle on a small hook lasts for hours. As quick as you can drop it to the bottom and wind up is the amount you can catch. In 2 metres of water.

BUT... Thats winter whitting. In summer the bigger whitting are usually further up the river systems. I dont know why but live yabbies and especially soldier crabs always get the biggest ones. Get them upto 45cm and cant fit your hand around their head. The bigger ones are usually found in more open water and a deeper. And only school with other bigger whitting. So if your into the small ones, go deeper again. Hope this helps

I fish up the straights from Tin Can Bay, and can tell you, that good quality whiting, not divers, but summeries, are hard to come by. We can easly put in 3/4 hours fishing for a dozen or so good whiting.(27/32cm) It beats catching 50/100 of the smaller divers. We do have to compete with the pro netters though.

Depends on what you call thick. Have had many good sessions in the Nerang where we have caught 40 or more. Not a big fan of triple digit catches though but there have been nights when it would be possible to catch a ton if you are so inclined. I try to limit my Nerang fishing to late afternoon into the night. Council chambers ,pines and up stream. Look for highwater around 4pm and fish run out tide. These tides tend to be smaller with around 1m difference between high & low. Smaller tides reduces run meaning less weight to fish. At night worms come into their own. By day try soldier crabs and jelly prawns.

Jeez Big One your complaining about putting in 3/4 of an hour for a dozen. I'd be happy to put in 3/4 hour for that amount and so would my missus.Sometimes you will find a decent school of whiting and pick up a dozen or more without moving,but usually you will have to keep moving to keep finding them.Or do as many do and just sit there after they've gone off the bite and hope they come back.Me i like to move,even if its just 50m and drop the lines out again.Cheers Jamie.

ill normally give it 15 min with no bites and then change spots, got keep moving looking for the fish.

Really?? Sit and wait?? Or move to 5 different spots... Thats doesnt sound like fun. I usually drift for whitting. They love a moving bait. Pick up 5 per drift and thats how i usually find the bigger ones in the deeper water aswell.

I never drift for sand whiting.Dont like it,found hook up rate much better anchoring.Know blokes that do drift and they never have results i have.Are you talking winter whiting BenDover? I dont fish for them but know drifting is the go with them.I might move up to 10 times in a session if their hard to find.And if ive caught no whiting in 15 or 20min i move.Always use 3rods if im on my own or 2 rods if i have a deckie.Cast 1 each side and 1 straight out the back to cover more ground.Cheers Jamie

I guess it all depends on the area your fishing JAMIE H. My whitting spot is pretty well known. Its a shallow sand bank that curves hard to the left on the out going tide. The anchored guys sit right on the edge of the drop off and only get the small ones. As the big ones didnt get that way for being silly. And spook easy. I drift the shallows and ALWAYS pick up the big whitting drifting off the edge into the deeper water. Shallows i get riddled with small bites. So it is hard as i have to have my lightly wieghted yabbie/soldier crab at the correct depth as i drift off the edge. And try not to let the pickers get it first. Then nothing but stillness and im onto a biggin . (elbow slapper) I dont take the smaller ones as the fillets are pointless.
