Hey, thanks Kim, If we have half as much fun as you 2 had last trip we will be stoked. I have high hopes but also realise as a newbie to the Barra I have to put my head down an put into practice what I have learned from the helpful folk at Ausfish.
I have been out bashing the credit card today, all stuff I MUST have u understand, twisted leaders and hook upgrades to do tonight. Counting sleeps? One of the boys is counting hours

    Cheers, Pete

LOL - you guys have got it bad!

Remember, there is no cure for IBD and I guarantee that a visit to Monduran will make it worse, not better, regardless of the outcome.......

Of course we are........................ 301 and counting.

i've sorted everything out bar leader solutions.

i was thinking of running a bimini albrighted to 80lb for slick rigs
    and
a bimini to twisted leader on separate rod for hard bodies.

someone told me the other day that slickies don't swim well on twisted leaders.

i'd be interested to hear anyones opinions either way...

    any help appreciated.

You blokes are just ganging up on me.......

BTW Jim, single strand leaders for slickrigs and frogs (80lb) and twisted leaders (60lb) for hardbodies are my preference........others may differ.

PS Have never caught a barra on a slickrig or frog!!

thank for the tip on leaders

it's probably one of those things if you don't know (which i don't) you just ask as many people as possible and go with the concensus.

and unitl i get up there and give it a go ----- that'll have to do.

    Re: Monduran Trip

Jim, I only run single strand 60lb leader and so far only the missus has lost one to a bite through......best 2 were 115 and 117 and they very nearly got through the 60....it was worn almost flat in places. we had 80 on the spin gear but had to run very short leaders as the knot didn't like going through the single foot guides too well. I might try it again on the baitcaster next time as the dual foot guides might handle the clunky knot a bit better.

    Good luck
    Cheers Roo.

    Re: Monduran Trip

what i dont get with these leadders is why they fail so much in fresh water.Back when i used to bait fish salties i used a 6 kg mono main line and 10 sometimes 15kg leader if we were fishing really diabolical country. We lost an occaisional one round the trees but not normally rubbed /bitten through.?any thoughts?

    Jim,

I am yet to be convinced the twisted leader is all that its cracked up to be. I can find more faults than good with them. Snaps..bad...twists get snot weed caught in them and they are just too chunky through runners and in the water.

I have never had 60lb straight leader fail yet (including with plastics). I have been converted by Roo and Jas W to the slim beauty knot to join leader and braid. It is the best knot I have ever used. tie lure on with loop knot. All easy to tie, and simple.

Owner upgrades are a must as you said!!

good luck with the trip mate.

    cheers steve

    Re: Monduran Trip

We were in the next cabin to Peter4 in October last year, he and his son are indeed men on a mission and fully deserve their great results!

We will be there this year around the full moon in Nov, and hope that both ramps are running this year.

My tip is think about how much you need to keep the hooks in the fish -v- how much you need to keep the hooks out of yourself. Barbed -v-crushed barbed hooks need to be considered in terms of personal resilience -v- a drive to Bundy and a visit to a busy emergency dept-you could lose a day or so...... and there is that poster from the hospital at the campground kiosk that says to leave all of the treble behind when cutting off the 'offending' fish.

I have squashed down all my barbs, and have a set of mini boltcutters (8") in my boat to help the less fortunate - ST66 or 6XVMCs might be a bit of a test for lesser tools.

Jim, I'm with Steve on this....I will never ever use a twisted leader again after a quality crosslock snap opened up on a good fish like it was on honeymoon. Snaps are the weak link, and I would not trust using the leader again even if only one of the strands got a good scuffing. Everyone has their favourites I guess....mine's wind-ons and loop knots.

Rick, the boltcutters are a great idea. Hope I never have to use mine. Steve would also have some professional advice about the management of embedded trebles. I think leaving the entire treble in is sensible as it gives the medicos something to work with. Unless you are lightly pinned of course.

    Cheers
