Can someone tell me how to keep yabbies on the hook???
Can someone tell me how to keep yabbies on the hook???
G'day
Thread them like a prawn, that is.... tail first, make the hook exit the chest region, between the legs where there's some nice structure

Yeah - agree with Blackened. I use a number 2 long shank hook when fishing the estuaries with yabbies. They are strong enough to handle most flathead and bream which will take fresh yabbies but still small enough to catch legal size whiting. Thread the yabby onto the hook tail first and slide it up the shank of the hook until the point of the hook is inside the main body part. Then straighten the body so that the point of the hook emerges right on the mid line between the bases of the bunch of legs. Leave it with just the point of the hook showing - don't bring the barb of the hook all the way out. The skeleton of the yabby is strongest at this point and you can put a reasonable cast on without the yabby flying off

u can also buy hooks with a couple of barbs alonng the bac of the shank, they r a great help 4 geeping bait on, they;re called bait holders by mustad. can b a pain dehooking fish sum times tho
scott
use the bait holders and put 4 or 5 on the hook
I also keep my yabbies in pine shavings (try a pet store) which seems to harden them up a bit. I also use a small bait keeper hook these days to keep the bait from sliding down the hook, I catch as many fish on the little no 8 keeper as I do on the bigger hook. In the surf last mth I had a double header, a small bream on the usual hook and real nice table fish on the keeper.
Gday again Busta!
Please tell me more about how you put 4 or 5 yabbies on a hook. I find that the average yabbie put on from the tail end with the hook point protruding through the breast plate between the legs completely covers the hook in a size 2 extra long shank baitholder hook.

You have to face it yabbies are soft....if you hook into the cast like you were chucking hard bodies or soft plastics on jig heads it ii quite likley they will come off.
I have always used long shank or carlile hooks, I note that my NQ relatives use bigger hooks for yabbies than I like to down here.
I find I am happier using a softer ( old fashioned ) style rod with soft baits like yabbies I recon you can throw em further and keep em on the hook.
I have never don it with yabbies, but I know some people hook small yabs & prawns several at a time straight thru the tail.
Some argue they stay alive longer and present a squirming mass that bigger fish cant resist...........hmmm supose so.
