Fitting costs

Anyone got any idea what the fitting costs are for electronics?, I know every case can be different but if a person bought a $400 cd player and speakers what would the fitting cost be on average?

What about sounders, vhf or nav lights?

Sort of thinking it's not improbable the fitting/labour could cost more than the electronics??

I think there is no standard easy answer, are they going to be flushmounted (cut in to dash) or fitted using it's standard mounting brackets. Is the wiring already there? or is it a complete new installation?

You are probably looking at $60 to $90 an hour plus materials.

Hi Scott,you really need a job to be quoted, and electronics and accessories are difficult to give an exact price as each boat is different.. for eg I just spent 5 days on a boat I thought was going to take 3 days but the owner just kept adding things as well. Peter is on the money...hourly rate plus parts

Ok thanks for the replies, I guess it is entirely possible the work could cost more than some electronics but take the point it will be entirely individual to the boat and owner.

How many hours and what would be the cost of all fitting out materials to fit out say a typical ( hard word I know) 6m boat to a standard most ausfishers would be happy with it for offshore fishing?

If anyone would like to take a stab??

At a stab, a 20' half cab, all associated wiring, nav. gear, lights and pumps, batteries from scratch and if everything was on hand... I dont think 3 days would be out of the question for a first class job?

No Idea really. I would spend best part of 6 or 7 hours on a 12' tinny taking it easy with battery, all wiring, nav lights, sounder/gps and bilge pump all done correctly with soldered joins etc.

40 hours labor.. 6m Edencraft.. with almost all of the works and jerks ie furuno 585 with 1kw wet box.. elecy anchor winch.. flush mount GPS..pumps... Lights. rod holder.. bait board..stero.. deckwash.. vhf 27 meg..etc etc...

Thanks Gary, gee that's a lot of time at say $70 an hour - $2800 add to that $600?? in materials, buss bars etc and sundries, it all adds up but I guess still possibly the cheapest bit of all!

I wrote up a list of what I wanted done to my boat, I mean everything, rang the grand marlin and got him to drop around and chatted about each item and bounced ideas around, between the two of us and about an hour I had what I wanted, with the work done professionally by an expert........

There are a lot of advantages in using a professional marine fitter.
* Knowing all items are fitted correctly with the correct wiring, fuses, waterproof connectors etc.
* Knowing all materials used are of suitable marine grade and quality products.
* I supply all materials at trade price for customers - therefore they save money on materials.
* The electronics I install are all tested to make sure they are working correctly, and they come with my backup for warranty as well as the manufacturer's warranty - so if there is a problem with a product, I see it gets fixed.
* You get my advice on what will work best and why I recommend it. (I am not going to give poor recommendations if I am responsible for it)
* I am mobile, so I come to you.
* My customers are always told they can call me at any time if they have any problems or questions about the products I have supplied & installed.
* If I see any existing problems I always bring them to the attention of the owner.
* I not only do electronics, but fibreglass repairs, toilet / sanitation systems, carpets, stress free anchor winches, restoration works ... pretty much anything that goes on a boat I can do. Therefore it often works out to be a one stop shop for customers.
* The biggest thing of the lot is I take a hell of a lot of pride in my work and I guarantee that when I leave it, it is faultless.
I have a family myself and value their safety on the water. The same attitude applies to you and your family.
I also have customers boats that are cruising Australia and World Wide.

So, for $77 hr + Materials you are certainly getting a lot more than just a "sounder chucked in a boat"

You would be amazed at some of the things I have fixed in new boats from the manufacturers, as well as DIY installs, and some of the bigger boat yards that do work they should be ashamed of.
I suppose this comes down to experience and credibility - I will only do installs to my standard - no compromise.

Some people aren't willing to spend money on professional installs, but those that do - like Gary (Garman 1 above) can certainly see and appreciate the benefits.

The time frame you ask for fitting electronics will vary a lot.
It depends on the boat, the existing wiring and what is required - ie flush mounting, where cables have to be routed, what product is selected etc.
I always quote, or give a close estimate before I start work, so you know what it will cost you.

One tip I would give anyone wanting work done - if you can, do it all in one go - that way it will save you money by not having return visits and having to "re-do" existing wiring, cleanup &* travel etc etc.
