vhf not receiving

on my recent trip to noosa, my icom 304, was transmitting a signal, but wasnt receiving. i found this by ringing coast guard to see if they had heard my transmission. i came through loud and clear but couldn't heara thing.

after several attempts and phone calls back to brisbane, i couldnt get the bloody thing to work, so forfeited my offshore fishing for a week

after giving the boat a good scrub at home. i dedcided to play with it some more.
as soon as i turned it on, i was recieiving loud and clear.

i called in a radio check to coast gaurd redcliffe and was heard, and could hear fine.


what the bloody hell happened????????????????

maybe somthing to do with the dsc?
can they only recieve in certain areas?

any ideas greatly appreciated as this vessel will operate in some very remote areas.

mate.. have ya connected the entena lead to the antena plug correctly.... found this to be a common issue with those that install there own.. some leads need to be soldered to the plug at the tip of the plug.

Did you get any noise if you opened the squelch right up?

i used the exisiting areial, which has been working great for 2 years

maybe still worth a check to see if there's maybe something loose

i did solder the power wires and dsc wires.

Maybe the transmit button was a little sticky and wasn't releasing properly causing unit unable to receive.My thought. Jim

I have a GME and had this a while ago. Playing around with, realised I also couldn't get any squelch. Sent it off to GME, new speaker and working fine again.

hi real andy first of all i didnt know how to put it all in words so i [pm] lippa my phone number so i could talk him through it easier mainly for me as i dont have all day to one finger type long messages.

gme's eat squelch buttons and handsets for breakfast.

Like the others said, if you can't dial up squelch look there first.
