    wires for extending electric leads

    hey guys
i installed my 55lb minnkota riptide today. the positive power lead is about 100mm too short for whaere i want it. im adding a circuit breaker anyway but only wire i could find is 8 gauge wire that was used in my car stereo. is this going to be alright or am i better off just getting some from a marine shop?
what would be the best gauge to buy anyway?

    cheers

I would go into Repco and ask for what you want, ie 2m of 40amp. This way you are assured of getting the guage you are after and avoiding a melt down.

I'm sure you probably know this but get proper connectors as well, don't just wind together and cover with electrical tape.

12g should do, just check the thickness of what is already coming off the electric bow mount. 8g will work.

like fishndive said, use the proper connectors.. water kills electrical wiring.

yea i just crimped lugs onto the ends of the 8 gauge stereo wire to connect one end to the circuit breaker and one end to the battery.
might just get some proper wire to be sure

Dont use old sterio or copper wire what ever you do.
Make sure you use marine-tinned wire. Or in about 12 months it'll corrode like a bastard.

How many amps does the motor pull? and what size breaker are you gunna use?

not sure about the amps it pulls
but have a 50amp circuit breaker, guys at the shop said it will be fine

i got some 8 gauge wire from the marine shop
if i wanted to extend one wire without the circuit breaker what connectors would i need or would solder and shrink wrap be ok?

Gotta remember if you use wire too small then you will melt your insulation before your breaker trips. unless you have a fuse also installed? but anything above 6mm and you should be fine
