    Telstra

I've just come back from a trip from the Gold Coast to Winton via Rockhampton ,Charleville and all towns inbetween and boy am I pi//;. dissalouded with the so called be all to end all next 3G phone system .
Service was available if you were in town and lucky to be in a spot that had coverage .
It's a joke really . I have travelled extensivelly in the back blocks and the adsl had a much better coverage .
So much for modern stuff .

    cheers Terry

Mate I don't think you get it, the moment you signed the contract you are supposed to wipe all long and short term memory of the service you used to get.
Honest how can anyone put in practice blame on this company or the complicit government that enabled them...it's imperative you must focus on the technology but exclude anything pertaining to core service....only then can you be a happy little OZI through the future while spending your money.

    cheers fnq

Are you on next G or 3G? They are different systems with next g being the choice for regional use.

Still not as good as adsl - sorry CDMA though.

The trick here is to buy the right phone. I used to carry 2 phones, one personal and one for work and I often noted that the nokia had better reception, always. The other trick is to buy a phone that does all the bands, GSM, 3G, 3.5G etc.

The other "must have" is a genuine incar kit with a quality antenna out on the bullbar, the extra distance you can get reception is worth the extra $$$ (there not cheap!!)

If your asking me, I'm talking 3G.

Heres an example; between Emerald, & Capella (50kms) without and incar kit & antenna, the phone drops out for the middle bit of the trip but with the kit you have at least 3 bars in that section.

Obiviously if your going across to 3ways NT from the Qld border, you loose reception.

Sorry Fish-n-dive; was just havin' a dig. Some people need to get there facts right;"ADSL" is a land line based product(basically internet)and as I said I'd love to have that mobile.ADSL landline coverage will possibly alway be better than a mobile phone system..

You think you guys have trouble when you're travelling, you should try living and working in the bush.

    A few points:

You have to have a phone recommended for regional coverage

You HAVE to be with Telstra (no matter how much you may hate them) Even though all the other providers apparently use Telstra's network, NONE of them have comparable coverage in regional areas - many are not even close.

One other thing, I don't know about seriously remote areas, but I'm afraid the days of saying that CDMA coverage was not as good as analogue in 90% of regional Australia are gone. A case of things seeming better in the past than they actually were.

It IS CERTAINLY true though, to say that 3G/Next G does not have as good a coverage as CDMA (yet? please let me live in hope that it will still improve yet)

A few weeks ago I was in Quilpie and my phone (optus)had no service whatsoever.

My buddy had a 3G phone with Telsra and had full service - even 15klm out of town.

If you want good coverage Telstra is the only way to go unfortuneatly.

    Re: Telstra

gee better add me to the list - I understood what he was saying

Telstra have theoretical coverage maps to compare their two services - both relatively crap - just one less crap than the other. They hand them out at phone shops if you're interested.
