The further inland (west) you go the worse it gets. It really depends on the route that you take but eventually the towns peter out and are too far apart and thats when a UHF/AM/HF radio comes into its own for safety.

Fortunately in OZ there are trucks traveling most roads and its not often that you cant raise one via the radio and most of there guys have satellite phones that get service everywhere.
