    quintrex spirit 510 / 520

hi mate is looking at a near new quinny Spirit 510 or 520 / 90 hp 4 s ( its in NSW and its the right price for him ) for open bay fishing and occassional trips to close in off shore reef fishing on the better days - run out to reefs up to 15 n miles off shore in 10 to 15 knots and then maybe occassionally having to cope with 1 to 2 metre seas and up to 20 knots on the trip back if the wind gets up - any owners of quinny Spirts or others with first hand experience offshore in a Spirit want to comment on how they handle in a sea and for crossing a bar in that sort of weather
    thanks rob

my old man has got a 570 spirt and it handles the rough weather awesome. It just skips over the top of the waves , he loves it. Im sure the 510 and 520 would be the same.

    qwpiohweoi,

I've had my Quinnie 570 Spirit for over two years and have been offshore plenty of times. She handles an ugly sea pretty well IMO. Like any boat though, you just have to drive to suit the conditions and try not to still be out there when conditions exceed the capabilities of the vessel.

As far as the 510/520 goes, I wouldn't like to be 15 miles out to sea in it with 20knts of puff on. It would be a worthy vessel for fishing the open bay and offshore on good days though.

    Cheers,

    JSY

    Dont mean to be rude,Rob....

But get your mate to do a few searchs on this site and others....

There are plenty of people who have been shafted with quinnies and stacer's that have posted about their drama's....your mate might get lucky and get a good one but likewise he might get a bad one...and therein lies the rub...Telwater dont seem to be too helpful in fixing manufacturer faults...

There are plenty of better built boats out there....

Iv'e been running my quinny for a couple of years now and I am yet to see a better built pressed tin boat.

Having said that, now why would your mate not be thinking of a glass boat for that work? I would have thought it a better option? There are certain advantages of this but offshore running is not one of them.

A quinny is after all, still a light tinny.

i agree.. I have a 540 Spirit and i am happy with it, great bay and family boat and close reef work. and although i woudn't hesitate taking it offshore occassionly I would have thought for serious offshore work I think you would be better in plate or glass. There is no need for me to go offshore here in Hervey Bay but wouldn't think twice for roonies or the southern gutters. Mine has a 4mm bottom and the new 520 (same size) has infact 3mm now so go figure..

agree with Disorderly Scott...there are lots of posts here by people who we presume post honestly who have had or have fixed cracking hulls in many current pressed brands particularly Albo (Stessco,Four Seasons, Ozcraft) and Telwater (Quinnie and Stacer). You might get a good one....or you might not. This is an ongoing issue and not in the same spirit as the bagging that goes on between ETEC and 4 Stroke owners...it is more a serious attempt to warn people off bad or high risk products. There are plenty of other brands which have never been mentioned as having these problems.

Hi guys, Interesting read, just wondered how savage boats in that size range compare to these brands as far as cracking is concerned. Darren

thanks guys no offence taken and appreciate the comments from all of you both good and bad which was the reason for the post in the first place - have fed the info on to my mate but i think he might have quinny buy fever - the reason for not considering a glass boat is that the boat is not really being bought for serious off shore work mostly open bay work'and big estuary and just being able to sneak say 5 to 10 kms off shore on the good days maybe half a dozen times in a year is a nice bonus - but of course if 10 kms offshore or more and if it blows up quick we all want to be able to still come home ok
    thanks again rob

    Rob,
i've got the 510 legend and i've had no trouble. i've had it out past the 40 fathoms on the goldy a number of times. as long as you drive to the conditions, there won't be a problem.

    Bombie,
mate, i feel your frustration and i hope your problems are sorted out with stessco. i have had the qunnie for awhile now and as mentioned, no problems apart from a bilge pump base that cracked. maybe i got lucky and didn't get a "monday" or "friday" built boat.
