Re: Tyres Again!
i have just bought the mickey thompson ATZ 4 rib allterrain for my troopy, 265 75 16r they are a 10 ply and appear to be half way between a normal A/T and a M/T they are quite agressive but not noisy, ive only driven them back from the tyre joint so cant comment yet about there performance. Greg

Re: Tyres Again!
Thanks Gegor,
I will be looking at new tyres in a couple of months and like the look of these, but can't find anyone who has tried them because they're so new. An update in a few weeks when you've had a chance to give them a run would be great.

Re: Tyres Again!
Hi, I run Coopers ATR 265/70/16 on my 2001 Prado. Given the choice, I wouldn't buy them again because the side walls bulge pretty bad when you run them on low pressure. This might be good on sand, but if you're traveling on gravel/rocky roads, they'll make you nervous. Having said that, we made it to cape york and back from Brisbane without a puncture. We were very cautious and went pretty slow tho. Good luck!

Re: Tyres Again!
reporting back on the mickey thompson atz 4 rib (not the 5rib) the 5rib are not as agressive. Ive done a few thousand klms now and im very happy, they have a good solid feel on the road , and less body roll etc. there not noisy, i still havent been off road seriously with them yet. the only thing i could complane about is in the wet they are ok but not super, similar to a bf allterrain( i had them on my old hilux) a lot of the klms ive done have been with the boat on the back and it feels way more solid now. i cant wait to do some 4wdriving now. Re: Tyres Again!
G'day,
The Pirelli Scorpion is available in two tread types - a high way tread and an off-road tread. The off-road tread is the pick if you want a tyre that cleans the tread well in muddy conditions.
Having said all that I think the compliance plate on the wide wheel Patrol specifies a "passenger" rated tyre. If you fit an "off-road" tyre or a dual-purpose tyre and anything goes wrong you may be uninsured for a compliance breach, so be careful. The OE Bridgestones on wide wheel Patrols were little more than racing slicks. I've used Toyo and Yokahama as alternatives and both are excellent road tyres and on sand but won't clean up in mud.
At some stage in the life of your Patrol model Nissan had a 6.5 inch JJ safety rim in steel. They will wear a 235/85R16 tyre which can be bought in lots of good brands at up to 16 ply rating for not too much money. They are a brilliant compromise combination that will allow pressure to be dropped from around 40psi to low 20's for serious off road work. You will still need an engineer's certificate and a compliance mod-plate to keep the insurance and road safety people happy.
