    Beginners Luck: 5th Cast

    Howdy,

Had the afternoon off yesterday so decided to hit up the local caboolture river to chase some lizards. After last weekends dismal effort at donnybrook of 1 X 45cm flattie i was keen to make amends.

Anyway called my cousin who is a mad keen land based bait fisho i knew he'd jump to come out. We put out some pots to see if we could fluke a crab of any variety and then found a nice little ledge that found on the sounder.

So my cousin rigs up his pillie on the hand line and i'm on soft plastics. over his pillie goes and im away as well.

First cast- solid bump... no fish and plastic (gulp fry 3" in pumpkin seed) is bitten right behind the hook. No worries we are in the right spot,

second cast - same spot and this time im on, not a big fish going 45cm but im on the board.

so my cous says give me one of those stupid lookin things. I rig him up and give him a few pointers on the the basic technique etc. I go back to it and a minute later he goes i think ive got one.

He starts to wind it in and just as we saw some colour its off zzzzzzzzzzz, and then back towards the boat and then zzzzzzzzzzz for about 5 minutes. anyway i finally get it in the boat and it goes 67cm.

His 5th cast with softies and he beat my PB of 61 held for 18months.

we ended up with 5 flattie 45,67, 52, 44, 41 kept 2 for dinner. ( all were caught on the gulps and the pillie got a sea toad Oh and we ended up with 2 choca block full muddies for dessert. (beats working)

    Cheers

Bugger desert. I'll take muddies over flatties any day of the week. Great catch. Ben

Yeah redclaw he suddenly started asking all about them. what colours are better what type of jig heads are best etc. so i think he may invest in some shortly!

Blooey, The mud crabs were great but we had caught the flathead before the muddies so fish and chips was on the menu.

The photos don't seem to want to attach from my computer so will try from the work computer tomorrow! ( in my lunch break of course!)

    Hey Jeremy,

We tried hardbodies for about an hour when the bites stopped on the sp's, but we didn't have any luck. (you seem to have the hb's sussed for the flatty)

I also prefer flicking sp's as i find it more exciting. although ive raised some decent flatty on hb's.
