    Tinnie around Moreton Bay?

I am looking at getting an ally craft rhino or a quinny dory 420 both with 30-40hp, I am located at Scarborough how far can I go out in one of these. I mean could I make it to peel or Mud or even brissy river. Maybe a bit optimistic but maybe even moretone

    G'day

Yes, peel no worries, mud no worries moreton no worries. Brisbane river, easiest of the lot.

I personally fish mud reguarly and peel with the odd trip to moreton in my 3.7.

Here's the provisions..... carry enough fuel, third out, third back and third reserve.

KNOW the bay and how the wind and tide have their affects and what areas can be treacherous. Anywhere in open water north of mud and good luck to you if it gets much over 15kts.

Start in close and bring your confidence levels up and for the bigger trips, take someone more experienced out with you.

Do/will you have a bilge pump?

Mud should be a 20-25 minute run for you from whyte island or manly harbor and moreton around an hour. Peel is 15 or so minutes from cleveland.

I suppose the answer is yes it is doable, but for christs sakes it's a big ocean out there, start close and venture further untill you get an understanding of whats going on

Hi Jaredluke, i have a allycraft rhino 4.2 with a 40 /4stroke and i leave clontarf ramp and head off occasionally to the brissy river mouth with no trouble , straight to the coffee pots (depending on tide) if its high tide straight along passed nudgee to luggage point i`ve even been right up into the town reach (brisbane) for a run ,, but as always you have to pick your days in the bay . As for Moreton my mates say if they go in a 4.2 ,they go early and head home mid morning , i`m not that keen so i`ll just have to believe them , Strongy

One thing about moreton bay is it can look really nice and flat, but can turn bad in half an hour. So just be wary. I always recommend that people go visit the local VMR/Coastguard(let them know what you are doing) then pick a nasty day and just stick your nose out into the bay, ie not very far. It is really worth knowing how the bay works, and this is a good way to do. That way if it does blow up you are prepared and it will just be a long slow journey home with no worry.

Thanks everyone, Blackened I will be purchasing a bilge pump. Hopefully I will have the tinny soon, the boat show was torture seeing all the boats without being able to buy any. I have a fair idea of the bay as going out on my dad's big boat so I know how bad it chop up. Strongy how fast can you go with a 40 on the back of the rhino?

    Re: Tinnie around Moreton Bay?

Thanks strongy, I quite like the rhino's because of there high sides and deck space. They had a good deal at the boat show it was about 6000 for a rhino, trailer, 30hp suzuki or merc and a trailer.

Jared, go for the 40 if you can. Also, if it's within your budget, get one with electric start and power trim/tilt. It will improve your boating experience and love of your boat no end. If you get the opportunity, have a look at the Yammie PTT tiller models in either 2 or 4 stroke. The Yammie trim button is positioned better on the tiller handle than the other makes of outboard, barring the etec which I haven't seen.
