I would like some opinions on a new reel for fishing soft plastics offshore. Budget is $200 but could stretch it to $300 if it means a better reel.
I am not particular on brand just not sure what to look for in a plastics reel as have always been a bait fisherman. So far i like the look of the penn 4500 slammer but at 530 grams might be a bit heavy.
Any ideas would be appreciated
sol 4000. best bang for your buck.
you can get a Daiwa Sol 4000 for around the $300 mark
Light, good drag and holds plenty of line

yep go a sol 4000 mine has already acounted for quite a few good size fish
Check out the Daiwa Tierra 4000. I've got a Daiwa Tierra 2000 and love it! I can't even put a negative to it.
Ive got a shimano hyperloop cost me 49 bucks at BCF. Caught plenty of good fish on it and it is still going strong.
You odnt have to blow serious bucks to catch fish.

Went to jones' to get a sol 4000 @$340 odd. Left with stradic 5000 @ $227.
Try them both in your hand and you'll feell the difference . The sol does have a greater spool capacity but with the 5000 size you'll almost cover that, and is it that critical anyway?

The common sense thing to do would be to take your rod to a reputable tackle shop & speak to someone who knows what they're talking about.
Try a few different reels that you think may be suitable on the rod you are going to use.
Then & only then will you purchase something to suit you.
You have to use it after spending your hard earned money; no-one else!
Nearly all the answer/replies given here are from those who have "something" & have probably never used any of the competition, they don't know what rod it's going on or anything else & are speiling off personal preferences.
OR possibly they could be from folks who have tried a few reels, done their homework, shopped around and come up with some answers which they are prepared to share to help reduce the legwork for a fellow member
You can get a Stradic for under $200 these days...just as good as a SOL, better in my opinion. You definately don't want a heavy reel for plastics work...the lighter the better.
