    Okuma drag settings info..detailed

I had always been interested what the okuma drag settings were.
So now we know for spinning reels.
Came across this on their web site:

    Size-45 65-lbs
    Size-55 70-lbs
    Size-65 99-lbs
    Size-80 99-lbs

Aveon, Inspira, Alumina, Epixor, Stinson Maximum Drag Ratings
    Size Max Drag (LBS)
    Size-10 12-lbs
    Size-15 15-lbs
    Size-20 15-lbs
    Size-30 35-lbs
    Size-40 35-lbs

Maximum Drag mentioned in many manufcturers websites is nothing short of false advertising.

For the correct drag settings look on the actual reels/spools.

There isn't a spinning reel on the market that would be able to cope with 99Lb of pressure.

Furthermore there wouldn't be many people on the planet that could hold a rod without being strapped into a game chair & harness running 99Lb of drag through it.

A Penn 130/ Finnor 80W/Hardy 130 or any other reel would burn out under that sort of pressure in a very shortish time.

Yet manufacturers say spinning reels are good for it! If they aren't {my belief} then why put such ridiculous figures up.

This is why it's laughable cos it's crap!

And this is a big selling point to many anglers/fishos.

THEN; some go as far as upgrading them to stronger again.

True..but the reel as we know can't handle those sort of stress being applied.
Then something snaps and they call it a crap reel.

With those drag settings being applied right up to 100 LB it will give the user the ability to apply what they need, but only up to a certain point.
Would have liked to have known where the safe area is for those reels in applying so much drag.
I’ll find out sometime this summer season.Hopefully !

Bit more info: From the forum guys in USA.

    V80
After a year testing my V80, I can say that the 99lb drag is . The V80 new out of the box had about 14kg pulled staight from the reel. I tested the reel with PE8 braid pulled from a spring balance, Static drag. After some time the drag went down to 11kg and now after 1 year my drag is down to 7.5kg and I need to really clamp it down to get 10kg. I have to say that when I tested a drag it was static as when I pulled it it jumps from 10 kg to 11.5kg.

I don't want to pull 20kg from my VS80 as I'm afraid that other parts break before the drag would slip!

There is a clear plastic washer which seperates the bale arm and the rotor. It has a round shape with awkward cutting and this washer will crush as soon as you use 9kg+ drag on the reel. So it is unrealsitic to use high amount of drag on the reel. Key no 323-1

The drag downgrades very quickly and I have changed 2 bale arm since them. Well I destroyed them. I've changed a few parts since I had problem with it. I've used this reel and has abused a lot from it, pulled YFT, Doggies, GT's, Bonitos, Skipjacks and a lucky Marlin which I couldn't land!

The reel needs a good servicing and I've ordered a second set of spare parts to put it back to shape so that I can hunt a few more fish with it. I normally use this reel as back up.

Oh BTW: I landed a few potential IGFA world record on my Okuma rod (4 in one session fishing)! A few weeks ago I broke the rod and it failed on another potential IGFA record. LOLOL

The safe area is to use the recommended settings which are clearly stated on most reels.

This yank's a di**head & anyone who goes down the same path would have to be in the same category. He's busted bail arms, basically burnt out the drag {not to mention other damage} & busted a rod.

I've been fishing for 40 yrs & never burnt out a reel or busted a rod because i use them for what they were designed.

IF YOU'RE so fixated on drag go and buy a Finnor or Hardy Zane Gray game reel not a bloody eggbeater.

I've tested 10kg's of drag through a rod a couple of times. I reckon 50kg's would darn near tear my arms off, let alone what it would to a threadline real if it was for sustained periods.

Good to see you've come to your senses spearsy

All jokes aside, I've never in my life heard of as many broken reels & rods as I have of late since the inception of manufacturers adding this ridiculous & unjustified information which is used as a marketting tool for unsuspecting anglers.

Couple that with Strong thinner line diameter braids & many anglers have the misconception today's reels are bullet proof.

    It doesn't work like that
