I've never heard of slatey bream / painted sweetlips (which have yellow spots) / slate sweetlips / mother in law fish - ever being called morwong.

Morwong are a completely different family of fishes - caught quite a lot in NSW.

Can't find any reference to Slaties (MILF) as Morwong on any fish id site either!?!

Different names in different regions cptpott... sort of like people calling venus tuskfish 'parrot'. I guess that's what the new system is trying to address.

The terms you use are all interchangeable LOCALLY for the same fish.(MILF)
However i think you are referring to a gold spot blubber lip (with the yellow spots) The slatey is IMHO a quite edible fish if bled immediately and iced then filleted. They do smell quite like ammonia or iodine(dunno which) and the whole esky stinks from one of them,.
The gold spot blubber lip however is totally inedible and not even suitable for cat food. Dont even try it.
