    J A C K S!!!

Hey guys well I want to hook onto a Mangrove jack and I don't know much on them even though I have read alot on them I need a little more information. I need some help with the following questions.

What is the best bait for them?
Where is good to fish for them in Brisbane?
Will I need a wire trace?
Is 20lb main line on a 5-10kg baitcaster enough?
What time is good for them?
What by-catches will I get whilst targeting these rough fellas'?

    All help is greatly appreciated!

    Cheers Tom

Try around the pylons of any of the gold coast canal bridges, Tom.

Bait usually a live mullet/herring/prawn under a float or weightless is your best option but they will also take a variety of dead baits. In terms of lures a variety of diving lures, poppers and plastics are all effective. I Prefer to use lures in the 75-90mm vacinity with decent hooks.

Brisbane itself has limited possibilities. 45 minutes north or south has better populations. You can try for your metro jacks around rock walls and bridge pylons or go for the natural ones in heavily snagged deep corners. All the creeks in the pumicestone passage area hold jacks.

Wire trace should be avoided as it will scare alot of fish. instead try using a long length of clear mono or flurocarbon. There is alot of debate over how heavy you should go but 20lb leader is the bare minimum. something between 40-60lb is more common place.

Yep plenty strong, 6kg mainline is normally sufficient. What more important is having a smoothe drag capable of putting out over 3kg's of pressure.

Like crabs any month with R in it. They can still be caught in the winter time but it is alot harder. Dawn and dusk are good bite times on a slack tide. if you can get a change in tide to coincide within an hour or so of a low light period your a good chance of picking up a fish.

Cheers guys. Didley: You know the bridge that you go over coming from Brisbane to southport (Gold Coast) is there any good? Also what are some good dead baits as I prefer to fish with dead baits - I was thinking whiting from a fish market should do fine

    Why's that Tom? Cruelty issue?
You're still a chance with dead bait but I'd reckon your chances would almost double with a livie.

lost count of the number of jacks i have caught over the years up here, everything from prawns to mullet will get them. sp, hardbodys, poppers they take them all.& if all fails try a good slab of raw silverside with the sinker going straight to the hook.even try a small dead mullet with some cuts in it, they love it.

Yes Tom, Whiting would work fine, the fresher the better. At some times a dead bait will out fish livies, I've fished with live poddy mullet and not been touched, while my mate was using old pillies and getting smashed all the time. It just depends on the mood of the fish, if your going to try in the colder months I'd suggest a dead bait, but I'd recommend you wait till summer or you'll just get frustrated. (Unless you can fish like Creek Vermin)
I'm not sure which bridge you mean but if its connected to the Broadwater you'll be in with a chance. If you can get in around Hope Island, Sanctuary Cove area you'd be in top MJ country. Structure is the key, bridges, jettys and rocks. Night time and very early morning.
Stay in contact in summer and I'll try and get U one

    Cheers Dids

    Pah!
I caught one on my maiden voyage in micro tinny, with squid strips, in Nundah creek.. Like baitmaster, fellow boondallite, I just put the rod in the holder so I could cast a SP around the same area.. looked back and the rod was doubled over and I thought.. Sh!t, and pulled in a 35cm Jacky.. let him go, he was too nice to take home at that stage.. Toothy bugga though, had a good go at biting the pliers while I retrieved my hook

Ahh, all the jack addicts are frothing at the mouth at this time of the year, me included. Its nearly 'game on' time boys.......

I did a run for them last week but no jacks down here yet.

**Mullet strips has outfished livies for me, by 2 to 1, and I use livies a lot.** Go figure.

New avatar fejjy? Been talking to crestcutter? I like it, lol.

    cheers
