Pockets in the bottom of a cast net

What is the point of the pockets on the bottom of a cast net?
    Do you really need them?
I was given a cast net last christmas and I'm having trouble throwing it .

The action i use is the same as Steve's and have used this on other nets with some success.

This is the first net I've seen with the pockets. They seem to get caught/ tangled up which in turn doesn't allow the net to open fully.

Can i cut the cords to allow the weights to drop fully and therefore removing the pockets.

    Frustrated

If you can persist with the pockets, they will save you lot's of casts as many fish will fall down and be caught in them, nothing worse than a caster who doesn't shake the net before bring it aboard.

    G'day

All of the nets I've seen have at least the bottom pockets, persist with it.

I throw a 12' top and bottom mono net, with the over the elbow technique...... works for me.

All about figuring out what throw you like and then practice practice practice.

The pockets help trap the fish when you are bringing it in so i would leave them on and just practice with them. I find this sort of net is good when casting off the bank as it closes flat when pulling it in, if you are on a boat or a jetty then a draw string net is better, instead of having pockets on the bottom they have lengths of mono running from top to bottom. These close the net and create one big pocket wich traps the fish so they dont fall out when lifting them high out of the water.

If its a cheap mono net, it will seem to snap shut and not spread properly.

Ithaught it was a problem I had throwing mine, till I tried a cotton net.....no problem.

the mono line the net is made of gets a memory and thet memory is of being bunched up in the bucket.

I tried a number of things.

    try this
soak the net in a bucket of hot water with fabric softener......you might want to do tjis several days running if the net is reay dry.... new hot water each day
    it does make a diference.
then get a dozen tent pegs and peg it out stretched on the lawn. leave it there a couple of days...............this make a huge difference.

post back how you get on.

    cheers
