    3 Batteries ???

    Call me cautious but I am thinking of having 3 batteries on my new boat.

    1 = for starting

    1 = run the electrics

    1 = dedicated backup

    I like to fish at night and even with the new LED lighting options, I would hate to be caught out wide with no juice.

    Is this overkill and therefore unnecessary expense?

    Just get an E-Tec mate.....then you only need one battery and a short piece of rope.

    Overkill. IMHO.

    Use 2 with a switch to go to one when stationary.

    Just my opinion anway. 3rd would be money could be spent elsewhere

    run two batteries and have the bep switch which allows you to run both batteries in parallel in case of emergency

    and if you want to run 3 banks

    I have run 3 batteries since I bought the boat for the exact same reasons, No I don't think its overkill at all. with all the gadgets I carry with me, dead batteries is the last thing I need

    Hi,

    I am sure you can get an onboard device that monitors your batteries and allways ensures you have enough voltage in the main engine starting battery.

    I think Piranha make something like this for the 4WD market.

    Works by cutting off the auxillary connection from the main battery when the Aux voltage drops below 12.9V.

    Maybe look at something like that, rather than add the weight of another battery.

    Also maybe look into a charging setup when the boat is stored, I am looking into a charger that is mounted in the shed and continually charges the battery so its allways in top condition and less likley to let you down at sea.

    A mate of mine only has one battery and carries one of those portable battery jump starters from super cheap as a back up.

    Have a look at the "energy matters" site & maybe have a chat to there technical dept.

    Bloody brilliant, no crap & will set anyone on the right track regarding anything to do with "alternative power"
