Just had a look at the Sunwater Web Site,
Mondy was down to 29% yesterday 27th March
I hope there will be some water left in there for the muster , might end up like fishing in a creek some where.

From memory, the best fishing i have had at Faust was when the water level was around 24/25% and the average fish was a good solid 110 cm's
As the level dropped the fish became skinner and skinner and the quantities of available bait fish dropped remarkably, at around 10/12% fish the same length recorded some some remarkable differences in weight. I guess the heavier fish was able to find more a available food source
When the level started to rise there was a population explosion of bait fish and redclaw, fish started to gain some of the lost condition. Now at 85% there has been a rise in the number of smaller fish caught, with larger model fish up to 141 cm's captured carrying a massive weight.
I guess the water level dictates the conditions of the lake both for suitable food source and fish condition.
Lower levels, less bait fish, maybe easier to catch fish but in a much poorer condition. Also they say, "The fish are there, but there is a lot of water between them"
It would be very interesting to read what some of you guys read into lower water levels as against higher water levels.
Weed beds seem to reestablish themselves within a time frame and provide cover for both bait and barra.
Over to you guys.
Cheers,
John.
Actually ..... I'd like to see Mondy rise by another 3-4 M - Some awesome looking areas would come into play ( like the fence line area South Arm B , Back of 2 mile or the bay next to SDA .
As John mentioned the biomass explosion would only enhance the fishery.
As for Faust - now is the time to be thinking of the re stocking ( winter) ..... Good bait available & cover in the back areas of the dam.

Water levels really are not a major individual factor. 3% was good, 19% was good fishing, 34% was too and I heard when it was last full was good too after cyclone Fran.
Its the quality at the time that matters. Dropping water seems to be bad from my limted experience I have seen. When they open the gates (which they are now for some strange reason that even the sunwater ground crews cant understand why) the fishing seems to deteriorate...I have my theories why.
Influx is good initially, then bad for a while as veg rots....then good for the long term for reasons Chris explained.
I would love to see it full to the brim!! if not 70 to 80%....imaging the new areas, imagine the space!!!
Some good rain NOW would be spectacular for Muster time I reckon.
Cheers Steve
Hard to say, the 35% range water levels has produced some awesome points and weed bed fishing, but those lower levels open up some awesome lay down snag fishing.
Im a bit of a knuckle drager I spose, really enjoy the down and dirty brawling of twitching a suspending HB thru a log pile jam up, getting smashed, then trying to extricate a fish from the tangle of timber he calls home. Its an expensive game though, lure loss is high, rod and reel stress is vicous, went through 2 props on the yammy, but what a way to catch fish!
Now the average size of fish is up, can you imagine trying to pull a 115cm from deep in a snag pile on the LHS of H, or out of Barra Alley in Talikberan Ck (spelling?), or from those snags that you can just see the tips of LHS as you round the corner from H to F?
Chris, I reckon Spot X wouldnt have much water on it at the moment??

As long as there is water we will all love it.... 38 last year was not bad once it settled, and it was a good winter, this year its been steady fishing, at 18 well yep awesome fun... The thing is I guess what ever the level some will have good days and some will have bad... I was there a couple of times at 18 were the fishing was dynamite but many in the camp still had the donutty taste after a week of fishin so from what I see water level is just a chance to change tatic and hope the luck comes through..
I love the joint no matter what the level for the intrest of the area bring on a full dam!

The same applies for the reverse Chris......keeping likely looking structure in the memory bank for when Mondy fill......more holding spots....bring on the H2O increase I say......or sit at 18% when it was Fun Fun Fun till Daddy took the T-Bird away
Clearly the increase in levels (last March) has paid dividends - The barra are in fantastic condition & have plenty of go in them ........... some of the most torrid barra encounters came from our recent trip ( big jumps by big fish) ........ & the fish that wiped MW away
MASA now need to do a couple of follow up stockings during Winter (if they can get em) - keep the place on the boil without the barra becoming too educated .
