I am looking at a small sounder/gps unit for a small tinnie. I have no experience with these units, but looking at one that initially appealed (Garmin 450s), i am starting to wonder just how useful a 4"screen really is in practice. The idea of looking at a map and sounder on split screen looks really useful in positioning yourself over a reef/drop-off etc, but am wondering if the limitations of a small screen mean thsi is not realistic tool in practice.
Am I better off getting a 4" sounder and using a hand-held GPS, which then also has other applications outside of the boat.
I would be interested to hear of people's experiences, and whether the Garmin that I am looking at is the best option.
i've got a Lowrance LMS-527. i think they have a 5 inch screen... split screen on these isn't too bad and you get use to it, and for the price i think it's one of the better colour sounder gps combo's on the market.
next year i plan to upgrade my sounder only and buy a Humminbird 997, or side imaging unit only if they make that and keep the lowrance as GPS only.
