    Whales vs Quinnie

    Hi all
Mentioned this in a previous post just thought it might save someone a bit of grief not to mention the pain.
Last thursday we preparing for a charter out of 1770 when the ambulance had a 610 quinnie pull up beside the charter boat so they could offload the injured skipper. Seems they hit a whale doing about 20kns and all 3 on board came off second best not to mention the quinnie.I guess it pays to keep a sharp lookout. They were about 7 mile out and i think it took about 2 1/2 hours to get back in, one hell of a trip for the skipper. They had to carry him off.
Might also pay to be careful if a 610 quinnie comes up for sale cheap.

Thanks for that , even today lot's of stuff happens we never hear about, no vision, no re-searchable record, unless a death.

Yeah whales spook me seeing them doesn't make up for being on the water when they are around.

    cheers fnq

Good idea to post this up Mark - we all need to keep our eyes peeled for whales (and turtles) .

I think it's a miracle that nobody on the boat died, they sure were knocked about badly.

It's even more amazing that nobody ended up with a lot of jewelry with the tacklebox full of lures that were spread all over the floor from the collision, so it's also a handy reminder to think carefully about how you stow gear in case of a collision.

    Cheers

Had my experience with the GREY BLUBBER which i posted here some time ago. Sorry, dont have much liking for them when they lift a 6.8m boat straight out of the water and we were stationary. Bloody scary. Mind you, dont condone the Japs killing them either.
Read an article somewhere recently which stated that if they get close to you, start your motor, it tells them you are there and they stay away.
Tried it a week ago and they didnt hit me this time!!!!!

It was interesting to see the damage to the Quinnie. There was a whoop in the deck where the hull had actually buckled. Like Tony said, they are luck to be alive. We saw 5-6 different pods/singles of whales including mother and calf on the charter. The skipper certainly respected them (and the rules) and kept well clear and we were in a 45 footer!

If you intend to buy a 2nd hand quinnie 610 in the near future, check it over very carefully to ensure it is not this one.

that's the hardest thing about it when they're around, you can't really avoid them, they can surface anywhere, and if one happens to surface 4ft from the boat when you're traveling at speed there's not a lot you can do to prepare for it.

hope the skipper and crew have a speedy recovery.
