You shouldn't be chatting away endlessly on ANY VHF channel. That sort of crap should be reserved for 27 mHz :-). Seriously there are hundreds of other users out there who might be waiting for a turn. Keep your message short and to the point.

Chatting should DEFINITELY not occur on 73. I would have thought you would have known that Mike? This is a calling channel where 99% of boaties make contact with VMR and Coast Guard stations. 67 is a backup calling frequency I believe (without consulting the manual). There are other channels specifically for ship to ship, but you should still keep it short and follow protocol.

VHF channel 67 is a supplementary distress/working channel..................

Misuse of VHF proves the need for correct licensing..............

    Leighton,

Have a look at this link: http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/att...2&d=1216291631

If you go by the rule book, VHF channels 16/67 are for the calling frequencies and the rest for working channels. 16 is by far the channel with the greatest listening audience. If ever a Mayday Selonce is declared then channel 67 takes over.

73 is a general working channel for reporting the operation and movement of vessels and to conduct public correspondence.

For general chit chat, find 72 or 77, just be aware others may be listening as well and will possibly get pee...d off.. if you tie up the channel

Best you use a mobile phone..

I’ve noticed that 21 has become a joke of late with idiots all over it gibbering rubbish. That’s a real shame because it has the Cape Moreton repeater. This is the quasi emergency freq for the blind side of Moreton.

Peter I have also had to log off by phone on the last 2 occasions because QF3 is so busy.

    That is not good.

Don't some of the local VMR's use 21 as a calling frequency also?

    Re: VHF Channel

You're all dead right about 21. being a repeater it is another channel for distress calling and as a working channel for the communication of the movement of vessels. being on the eastern side of moreton is the best channel to use to get back to the main land. Unfortunately we cannot stop the chit chat and the channel does not qualify for the silence period, so we have to put up with it.

Only hope that the message sinks in one day to those who don't appreciate its real purpose for being there.

Yeah.. I was over there the other night around 2am doing a tow job and 21 was our best channel back to base.

IF... you ever need an alternative channel for EMERGENCY in the bay.. try channel 63 - Water Police. My understanding is that it is now also a repeater.

The rescue chopper over Bribie was talking to Life Saving Rescue headquarters at Berleigh one day and the reception was like standing next to you and talking.. Again only for Emergency if no other channel available - but then when in need, use any channel you can to get attention....

Sorry for QF3 being busy... Please remember if the first call does not get through, then wait 40 seconds and retry. General coms practice is to do 3 calls in 2 minutes. In the radio room we monitor 8 radios each with their own frequency / channel, also man 2 telephones and a computer for weather updates. Sometimes with one person....

    No apology required.

I also thought that 81 had a repeater on Mt Glorious so it was great inside the bay.
