Native Title granted to 80% of NT waters

I was under the impression that areas of the NT were already protected with do's and dont's regarding indiginous areas particular in travelling and fishing in particular areas . My years spent in the Territory gave me a better insight into understanding the views of our indiginous Australians.
One funny episode was in the 70's I was fishing a spot called Dreaming Lagoon with a black mate and a white mate .We caught only what we were allowed to ,however weeks later there was a story in the paper where Malcom Fraser had been fined for being on DL fishing without permission .
Timi boy is right regarding the reasons they want the power .
Im lucky I spose having seen/experienced the early NT and have many stories of mateship with our 1st Australians ,some good some bad .

Money and power?!! Could it be that these Indigenous groups are in this for the following; heritage, culture, tradition, identity, resource management, preservation etc?... Far from money and power via the mere administerial role. This is also by far a closure to rec fishers etc "ever ever again". So yes, it is a little cynical as we are really not all the same. Cultural indifference here appears to be a major factor in viewpoint and understanding thus the derogatory stereotype re money and power.

Sorry folks, I think you must have misunderstood - it is my hope that m&p will not drive the management of this area, but it is my experience that eventually it will.

Definitely keen to be proven wrong. I have great respect for Aboriginal Culture, and as I said, if the selection of management of the board overseeing the area is done sensibly and sensitively, it can succeed.

Cheers for the clarity. I don't think it will eventually be a m&p focus in this particular setting, from my working experience likewise as an ex-NRW staff member and aboriginal person... I do however agree that some 'individuals' in a minority of organisations / corporations go for gold (so to speak) and I've worked in the realms where these people exist. But black or white they are everywhere waiting for opportunity... I also agree that the board selection and the choices made by the board are very important, however, if there is a govt administrator in place by the funding body the board will only and ultimately just have their say and also be informed on arising issues etc, so merely a consultancy at best, which will take away the m&p opportunities...

Thanks for the information Paul. I have spent some time up in Nhululbuy and it is such a lovely place. I put this ruling up as an FYI from a press release from the minister here in QLD (I get a copy of all the releases the Government make).

I agree with your comments regarding M&P; be they in business, in government or in community groups, there are always individuals who want to capitalise for their own benefits under the guise of "common good".

I am sure there are going to be some teething issues, but the great working relationships already in place between the authorities and the aboriginal groups concerned, the outcomes will be be more than likely positive.
