after flooding it is not uncommon to get freshwater fish well into the sea.

After a decent flood about '93/94 period I went out to Woorim reef to see what was hanging there in what i expected to be pretty salty water. I caught two spangled perch!

About 8 weeks after that I was fishing in the Pine River near Castle Hill Estate and scored half a dozen tilapia that were none worse for wear.

This was after that deluge that saw Strathpine cop 300mm in 24 hours.

Bass migrate to saltwater for spawning at this time of the year.
Usually into rivers and creeks moreso that openwaters though.

It may have been a Sand Bass, a saltwater species not directly related the Freshwater Bass but looks somewhat similar (actually slightly barra looking in the head area).

Quote From Native Fish Austalia web page on bass:
"In the 1990s, fisheries research vessels captured a number of Australian bass at sea, several kilometers off shore and this led to the theory, then backed up by initial genetic work, that bass may share a common gene pool, rather than being different in separate river catchments."

could well have been a bass. pity tho' they are spawning at the moment so currently closed season for bass.

    Cheers Roo.

I can personally vouch for the fact that Warrior knows exactly
what an "Australian Bass" looks like,
his missus Sharon catches them all the time.

Yet another story about Bass being caught during the closed season.

God this annoys me...People who dont keep up with the rules and regulations in regards to the sports they enjoy. Bass are OFF LIMITS (except in impoundments) during their spawning run (Jun-Aug inclusive). Its not a hard concept to grasp.

P.S Not having a shot at anyone...just venting!

yer that is what makes it funny i thought most people would already know that i learnt that in year 5
I don't think the fella that caught the bass would have known about the restrictions on bass as he was fishing in the salt for flathead of a pier that is 500+m long but i do agree there is alot of people that are fishing for Wild bass at this time of the year when they shouldn't
