how much is the unit costing you?
i have been looking at the hummingbird matrix 47 3d, as i was thinking that the 3d display would help a newbie like me to understand what im seeing on the bottom! has anyone got a 3d? Is it a good idea to go 3d or should i just learn a standard display??
I was also thinking of hooking it up with gps, has anybody had any experience of how the matrix's go with that?? Any comment appreciated as I want to get this decision right. Thanks gazza
how much is the unit costing you?
about $500 aus for the unit and just under $100 ish for the GPS sensor Plus delivery
the gps is good so long as this model accepts navionics cards....the built in maps might not have too much detail...not sure if it does or not. I have a Matrix 55 and the GPS is quite good, very useful to have. I'm not sure about the 3D veiw but I am keen to hear any other thoughts on it....would be great for prospecting over reef areas if the sea is flat....the roll of ocean waves might distort the image to make it appear more undulating than it really is tho'. Would be great in the creeks to for sussing out deep snags and rock bars.
Where are you getting this combo from? prices are cheap as chips.
Cheers, Roo.
roo i was looking mainly at plant G P S and J & H Products they seem to be the best prices, the only resevation is im not to sure if the maps can be added, or if you can only have the built in ones? i see your point out about swell out wide with the 3d but ill spend all my time on smoth or partialy smooth waters where i cant see it affeting things to much but its not somthing i thought of, i have included a link that shows a demo on youtube looks good for that $!

This is the model you need if you want to use GPS as well...Matrix 47x
The "x" denotes international model which comes with the World Map installed. the Models sold in the US are for US only and only have a US Map. Otherwise it seems like a good unit.
Cheers Roo.
arr i see, so that is a combo unit? where as the one i was looking at was just the fishfinder?! i should look at this harder........
oh no sorry did'nt read that right, its the same unit but the x has the international maps! so am i right in thinking that all i need to do is add a GPS receiver to make it a chartplotter gps fishfinder combo (or do i have the wronge end of the stick there) ??!!! this is stuff i don't really get, so im going to have to do some more homework!! but the 3D is still looking tempting
if it's capable of chartplotting, then all you will need will be the GPS receiver.
i think what they are saying is that without the "x" you won't a map of australia. or just an outline of one.
but basic chartplotter is really all you need. and the unit will work fine with the GPS receiver.
The model Without!!! and X at the end of it is a US model...and as such only has a map of the continental USA. It wont have a world map. the "X" denotes international or export model which has a world UNI Map with detail to 4nm around all major ports...thats why mine works fine for the tweed area i fish so long as i dont go past the traps off kingscliff or I drop off the detailed map and go onto a basic out line map with no contour information or detail. Mine has the option to add a Navionics card which I have for Rosslyn Bay to Brisbane and gives full details through this entire area. the Matrix 47 does not have the option of adding a navionics card so you would be left with a chartplotter with no detail apart from the tracks you lay yourself.
To be Honest, for the $500 you save getting it from the US I would not worry about adding the GPS function.
