What is the general consensus for tyre pressure in the mud, up or down?
or leave 'em alone?
What pressure do you run?
up
down

i run 38lb in my maxxis i cant see why u would want to deflate in the mud, unless its really sloopy stuff. The whole point of the muddies is to Dig so deflating them would just make em softer and risk damageing if u hit hard rock or dirt.

Not an option - nil change.
Have never found the need to do either whrn in the mud.
Yeah no change, you want the tyre to work through the slick and bite into something more solid, one time we decreased pressure was on very light clay where the top skin had dried a little but underneath was still sloppy, decreasing tyre pressure was in this fairly rare instance the only thing that kept the cars moving forward - the patrols anyway nothing helped for the toyota.

Yeah. you forgot the "leave them as they are" option in the poll.
I dont change my tyre pressure for mud driving. I would if someone could convince me that it helps...
I am no 4WD expert, but I cant see it being much different from dirtbikes.
Less pressure = bigger footprint
Also, where there is mud there is usually hidden tree roots and rocks. Less pressure would help here by allowing the tyre to adjust to the shape of the ground.
I recently fitted a speedway style tyre to my enduro bike and run 8 psi. It grips on everything as long as you dont stop, then you are stuffed
Interesting comments.
My view was leave 'm. I see the poll suggests down but the writers say leave em. As for damaging tyres you are far less likely to do damage to a low pressure tyre than a hard pressure tyre.
I should have and would now if I could have included leave them alone.
Thanks for the feedback
id like to leave mine inflated as of the flogging they cop in the mud if i was to deflate i would surely roll one of the rim.

I drop mine from 36 down to about 28. this will cause the side walls to bulge therefor giving you a larger foot print and help with traction.
IMO deflating your tyres slightly will also help keep the risk of staking down. How? if you have a stick coming out of the mud the side wall and tread can push in a little better than if it was completely inflated. Just like a balloon, if the balloon has allot of pressure its easier for you to pop it compared to a balloon that has less air inside.
If you drop your pressures too far yes they could be damaged or come off the rim. but if you drop them slightly i think the risk of tyre damage is minimal.
just my thoughts

Well as a matter of interest 4x4 monthly just released a free DVD with the mag (funny how they figure things are free once you pay for them?). It has an interesting demo of deflated Vs inflated tyres and the damage done.
No doubt deflate for the beach and the rocks but mud is an ongoing debate.
The theory of digging for something solid to grip may be OK if the bog is shallow and there is something solid under it, but I am talking serious bog where there is deep s#it and digging gets you deeper in it.
