On the water at around 9am today at White Is. ramp - I must admit as we sat under the bridge getting lines rigged, (the bridge being pretty crappy shelter form the rain, but the best shelter on offer) I was wondering if we may have been a bit rash in taking the 'showers clearing' forecast from the BOM literally.
Once rigged and sorted out we headed down to the terminals. Got on to a very nice fish on about the 3rd cast on my brand new prawnstar (first time i've used these lures). After a few runs I boated a very nice bream. No measure on board but was up around the 35-40cm mark. Was I stoked... well mabye just a bit Time for a quick piccy and then back he went. Got another couple smaller fish (~30cm) and lots of bumps for the next hour or so.
Decided to whip across to the rock wall upsteam from the sewage outlet. 3 or 4 drifts along it produced nothing except a few bumps and... the loss of my new (and already dear) bloody prawnstar - and not even to a fish!! ARRG!
Oh well - good chance for a cup of coffee and a re-rig. By now the sun was starting to show signs of breaking though and we decided to go back to the terminal. Used a 2" 'kokoda' grub in purple/red colour. Boated 3 legal breams in about an hour - hour and a half. Lots of bumps and visible chases kept us whoopin and holerin the whole time Had a quick chat with a wharfie fishin off the wharf with handlines - hed picked up a nice snapper on bait (no idea what bait).
After things went a bit quiet at the terminal we headed out to the reclaimed land rockwall where my mate get a few strikes on the surface - two hookups but no result. Not long afterwards he piucked up a ~40cm squire on a slow retrieve.
So a pretty bloody good day. Our first exploration of the river mouth, and our first full day on plastics. Won't be our last, either.
