For the last few months I have been quietly working on three new projects for the barramundi industry.
Firstly I / we have a small fishing, camping and travelling pocket booklet based on barramundi impoundments that will be useful for first time travellers, retirees and anyone with an interest in barramundi and the outdoors. It will be available very soon to the general public and it will help give a kick start to those just stepping into the barra scene.

Secondly, I have the Mother of all Impoundment Barramundi Books getting closer to being finished. Hundreds of pages of intense, in depth writing on a topic that has caused so much confusion for many anglers over the years. It covers the whole story, home truths, from start to finish, no stones left unturned from techniques to where and why, in depth winter explanations from deepwater to shallow and it will help those who choose to read and want to learn all the finer, often missed details of lakes and barramundi and how they operate. If you never quite get the full message in my writing styles from previous years, well this book will help you understand where I come from and why impoundment barramundi and lake fishing scene is so hard to even describe in short paragraphs. If you think I write in a cryptic style, you will eventually know why. Simple wording never does justice; not to the complexity and interlocked world of barramundi, weather and angling. I've almost clocked 2000 study days on barra impoundments, and about 22 yrs with salt barra, so there are some special gems of information enclosed. If you are looking for that book that ties it all together, this one will surely change the way you think and improve your perception on barramundi.

Thirdly, I have a DVD on lake barramundi in production that takes you through the world of weather and water changes and how it effects the moods and modes of barramundi and how anglers need to adjust their fishing styles to stay in touch with barramundi. It has a chapter on the rarely talked about underwater current flows in lakes which highlights the ever changing world of impoundments as well as how current flow governs fishing success in lakes. The book will go where no man has gone before and the DVD will open new chapters that will expand the modern world of barramundi in impoundments and lift us to new levels in understanding the fish and the water it lives in.
It is time to have anglers stepping up a few rungs with their fishing, and in my stay on earth I feel it is now time to bring up to date information on the scenes so anglers can use it as a template or a base foundation to grow even further. The barra industry is a bit messy at the moment, so this is my way to help the situation.

I have just returned from a week at Lake Monduran where we not only fished for barra, but went underwater in the murky depths in search for new information. I retrieved my data logging devices from below the surface in Monduran that have been in place since May 08 and will download and graph that information to get a better understanding on the Monduran system so we can compare that to the likes of Awoonga. In 7 days; 3 days of rain and two days of extremely cold conditions (frosts) we explored, fished and filmed Lake Monduran as part of the DVD. It was great to explore the lake and now with 20 odd fish on film up to 118cm it will make nice viewing. In altering weather conditions we couldn't have asked for better crap weather to film Monduran.
So if you have been wondering what has been going on up this way in the quiet section of the barramundi scene, now you all know.

I bought another Barra book a while ago which gave some of the broad strokes but left me feeling like I needed more specific detail, so I'm looking forward to this reading your book.

Two out of the three will be available early Spring. The big book will be done when it's done. I can't speed that one up, but a Christmas deadline for sure, most likely way earlier. The material doesn't stop flowing, so much to say that needs to be said. No need to hurry or rush, the content is full of super fine detail but I'm wondering where to stop writing. 300-400 pages maybe?? I'm well over 3/4 finished. It is the type of book/work that you need to take away with you alone and read every word to get the messages. It is in depth, way in depth. Skim reading won't work with this one. No point writing two books, so I am trying to write carefully and get all the info into one package. That is a job in itself to cram 13 years of Awoonga experience in book form, plus years of photos. It will be worth waiting for whenever it arrives.
If I'm a bit quiet up this way, you know why. Thanks for the replies and positive thoughts. It all helps with the result of the final product.

The barra industry is a bit messy at the moment, so this is my way to help the situation.

Messy? Am I missing something?
All the Barra dams have had top ups after dire straits, bait explosions, dedicated stocking groups have been busy as bee's filling those very dams up with fingerlings for our benefit, Brisbane anglers are in arms reach of trophy barra, fish to nearly 80lbs are being landed (well done sm) fish of ridiculous proportions and more than likely over 80lb are being caught at the fabled Tinaroo (well done barraboss) and a new generation of young lads up there kicking some butt and changing peoples attitudes through passion and knowledge of the species.
People getting smarter and better with C&R, attitudes towards anglers who chose to take barra for a feed are more relaxed, families on the water taking turns on strike, geez the list goes on. Better camping facilities, more people making a living out of other peoples hard work, Callide on the rise again, catch and kill comps slowly but surely being weeded out..........................................

Monduran dam has really come on line and is no longer considered Awoonga's little brother, homer has been caught by Stevey B, goodness knows how much homer weighed?? Tackle revolution, independant tackle stores kicking butt (good stuff foxie) as well as the gun stores in major cities like Adam Merediths tackle warehouse, Salties at Bundy, tackleworld Hervey Bay, Pats in Gladdy, all getting a slice of the pie.
Blokes in blue utes not getting noticed (well done squidda) people not wanting to get noticed making sure they get noticed, defibs coming on the market for fisherman, truckloads of great info and reports and banter on websites............thank god for that, fishing stories not told are lost forever.
Did I mention the barra?? More and more anglers getting to experience the feeling, kids like young Caleb Hardy (little grey mens young fella) getting to experience the rush at the age of 5, camping trips and weekend escapes from the big smoke, shit I forgot to take a breath.
Crikey, where's it going to end, these big magnificent fish just keep on getting bigger, and someone keeps raising the bar. Over 1000 days on Barra dams and I am seeing stuff I have never seen before, learning as much today as I did when I first hit a barra dam.

Good luck with your triple treat JM, Im sure many wait with baited breath, however I fail to see the mess you speak of, but I most certainly do see some tidy barra fishing/industry with access all area's, regardless of whether you live in downtown Camp Hill, or its the first time you picked up a rod.
Hail to the great Barramundi, we owe it all to you and the great people with the foresight, and now the effort to stock our dams with Barramundi!

That is a good list of bright shiney positives you mentioned, but it is the unmentioned darkened negatives that the average travelling angler endures that need the work and the change. I'll add a few more pages just to cover your ideas and concepts that I may have missed.
Like my above name Jas, "A Different Perspective"- its all healthy to have views from different angles to clean up a few misconceptions in the industry to build better platforms for future anglers.

No need to add more pages on my account jm, the world is full of "different" people, hell it would be a boring place if we were all the same. The word "misconception" too is able to be interpreted in many ways.
What I, you or Joe Bloggs consider a misconception may be fact for others, because misconception is subjective.

Everyone has their own experience, and in fishing that experience should not always be measured in time on the water or angling ability.
Yes history and experience are good teachers but most certainly not the only ones, I personally know people with squat barra angling experience that are incredibly gifted and have lots for all of us too learn.
I am not too good to learn from anyone regardless of experience, every day I see something new or look at things from different angles, some of the guys posts on here I read and go "how smart is that", yet they live in Brisbane or elsewhere and only fish Barra 10 times a year.
Not being argumentive here, far from, just expressing my take on a few subjects.
I too have been working on a book, so we should be able to get "diferent perspectives" right across the board on the above subjects.

I say well done to all the stocking groups that give these guides and buinesses a career IMHO greatest asset.

Johnny mate you are a true Steve Irwin of the Barra world, with your extream approach and so much info stored up that it not only baffles the average fisho but sometime scares him. Like you said putting into a book will only serve the greater good and unlock the sometimes cryptic style. Congrats mate

A different perspective is what fishing is all about with you Johnny, Jas and basically anyone within the industry all have thier own takes on it, some go out and put in the time, some research, some simply ask questions, and some somehow just seem to be able to read water and drive to the fish. Either way anyone who puts pen to paper or puts out a DVD will only add to anyones fishing knowledge and thats the plus for anyones perspective.

Anyhow Great stuff Johnny I like the idea on the travelling booklet, and look forward to reading your book as do all of us "Barra Fishing Ausfishers"
