What motor to use for trolling?

my question to Ausfish boating community is; what is the best trolling engine to have on board your boat? I have a Quinni coastrunner (not too sure that was a good choice after reading some threads listed here). The electric outboard motors look efficient and quite but you need an extra battery presumably and for the best results you need a bow mounted one. A bow mounted electric outboard would be dificult to use on a coastrunner, so I wonder if I should just get a 2 hp 4 stroke auxillary outboard and use that for trolling it will save damage being done to the main 60hp merc (keep going too shallow whilst trolling). Is my thinking sensible? any advice would/should be useful.

I guess the short answer is, get the small Motor for trolling, it will work a treat, use bugger all fuel and might just be powerfull enough to get you home one day if the main Motor has a bad day!

Only problem with a small two stroke would be the noise factor. When trolling it pays to make as little noise as possible. If you troll through a school of fish with a nosiey two stroke chances are they will take off. I would look at a transom mounted electric. They make next to 0 noise and models begin at only a few hundred dollars, plus a battery and charger.

hi montz i have a 2hp yam on my tender and i would be very surprisied if you could get your hull up to a reasonable trolling speed taking into account currents and any wind affect but i may be wrong .im on the sunny coast and if you want to test mine on your hull call me and you can see before you buy.good luck anyway .gary mooloolaba.

I have a Quinny sports with an 80 Yammy 4S and it trolls beautifully all day... sometimes if the wind is behind me I toss out a drogue. A mate of mine has a similar setup with a 60 4S but he runs a small 2S OB for trolling and I think its a nuisance, noisy, smoky etc etc. Worse thing is when a gust of wind strikes or you snag something, there is no steering or power to play with. I'd rather stick with the 4S. Incidentally I got a lecky on the bow of mine too, ya just need to mount a flat bit out front, no big deal, just dollars!
