Fished Mud Island again today. Was a solo mission today. Plan was simple, hammer the same area I scored on Monday, and try to get that reel screaming again.
Again didnt get on the water until 9am. Was a bit windy and bumpy this morning, and the first couple drifts were quiet. Slightly changed drift patterns and found some small squire coming onboard. Mostly throwbacks but got a couple keepers at 36cm & 37cm. Then got a big hit and heard that reel scream I was after. Fish took a big run which had me thinking it was a 70+ snap. Unfortunatly I didnt get to find out. A few big head shakes and it spat the hook. Obviously was disappointed, but thats fishing.
Over the next few hours was getting lots of throwback pinkies, and a 38cm estuary cod. Kept drifting the same area, just slightly changing the angle each time.
About 3pm I just as i started a new drift, First cast got smashed, line peeling fast, and I was on edge after losing a nice fish early in the day. This was the first decent fish on my new reel, and it slowed the fish well whilst gently applying the brakes. Slowly worked him back to the boat, and loosened the drag in anticipation on it running again when it saw the boat. With its last run finished, I saw the colour of a nice snap coming up. Slipped the net under him and pulled him in the boat. I was stoked! Measured up at 76cm. At that time I had to head back to the ramp to pick up the missus from work.
Once again the winning plastic was a 5" jerk shad in blue pepper neon. Tried a few other natural colours today aswell, and 4" lime tiger minnows accounted for lots of the pinkies. Again I was using 10lb fireline and 12lb flouro carbon leader. I also think this shows you dont need to spend a fortune on gear to catch nice fish in the bay. Im using a Wilson LCS snapper light rod ($99) and I got the Daiwa Capricorn 2500 off ebay for $106. That outfit handled the fish no probs at all.
Was another great day and mud produced for me again. Goodluck all those competing in the R2M. I wont be participating.
