Bargain tackle SE Asia

Hi all,

Off to Malaysia (KL) and Thailand (Phuket) for a couple of weeks next Thursday and wonder if anyone knows of any options over there for getting well priced but quality reels and tackle. I know they do copies of everything but I am hoping to save some money on quality genuine Shimano or Daiwa reels. I've been to both Malaysia and Thailand before but never looked for tackle. This time I'm keen to get a bit of new gear and would appreciate any info from other Aus fishers to make the search easier.

in all honesty, i doubt u will find any genuine brand name items. i rekon they are all copies, but for the price u pay, id pick some cheapoes just for fun.

You might be right there. It might be the same gear you see on E-bay but at least I'll be able to see it before I buy.

I've just spent two weeks in Malaysia (Penang) and didn't really have time to hunt up tackle, though I did stumble on a shop on Beach Rd, near the Bukit Jambul shops. All I bought were four spinner baits at $2.50aud, and two big poppers that have GT written on them. The poppers were $15aud each. I can't remember the name of the place unfortunately, but will see if it is on the packaging when I get home (sitting in Singapore airport as I write this).

I did some searching on the net before I left Oz, but without any luck. I did find a few other stores around Penang by looking up the local yellow pages, but didn't get time to go check them out. The shop I found advertised Shimano and Daiwa, but I didn't price them.

I haven't had much luck locating any stores on the internet either but I did find that Ebay has a seller Minstor Tackle which sells genuine Daiwa and Shimano gear. The store is Malaysian so I'll hopefully find a walk-in tackle store selling the good gear at the right price when I get over there

I bought a Penn liveliner from Minstor tackle, and it collapsed when it got a big jack on it. I wont buy from asia again. Whats a lost fish worth? I buy Shimano from the usa now, our exchange rate is so good.
